Which would be more desirable, 6.5-24x50 or 6.5-24x44? What is the advantage of 50mm over 44mm? I will use for target/varmint shooting.

I think this is in the wrong forum, but for what its worth. I prefer the 6.5-24x50 because it gathers more light.
I will repost for the second time. Previously posted under GD for the traffic. thanks

There is an Optics forum in the AR15 section (also one in AK47 area) which would be a better place to ask.  I agree with Cray, all things being equal I'd go 50mm.

What are you shooting and how far do you REALISTICALLY plan on shooting?

For shooting in mid day, either size scope will work fine.

If both scopes have equal quality optics, the larger scope will work better in low light.  But you may be able to find a 44 mm scope with better optics that out performs mediocre 50 mm scopes in the same situation.

The larger objective forces the scope to be mounted higher, so stock fit may be a problem, and the larger scope is generally heavier, so that's a factor if you're going to carry the gun.

Do you want me to move this thread to the optics forum?

I am at 100 yds presently and plan to shoot out to 350. I don't expect much at over 200. My 24" varmint barrel will shoot inside of a fifty cent

piece with the first powder that I chose (24gns 3031) I plan to work toward max, find the best wt. for this powder, and move to the next powder. I want to find the best scope that I can afford because I love punching holes in

paper. May do some crow and coyote shooting as well.

Do you want me to move this thread to the optics forum?  I appreciate the help. The extra weight wont be a problem, gun is heavy. Please move to Ar15 optics.

50mm  puts your parelex higher too, (line of sight/barrel) distance apart.  closer the scope is to the barrel the better, unless it is a varmint/sniper low light go with the 44mm
