I know this may seem like a silly question or a common problem but here goes.

I have an SBR that is failing to extract a case about every 2-4 rounds. Sometimes it runs fine with no issues.
The gun will fire and fail to extract and pick up another round off the mag and jam up.

My set up:

10" upper (unknown mfg - bought from the EE)
DPMS M16 BCG bought new
Superior Arms lower registered on a F1
MagPul UBR stock with a regular carbine buffer

What should I be looking at replacing first?

I really like this set-up .. I just need to get it running reliably.

OH and I have a SureFire FA-556-212 silencer waiting for a F4 and it will be used almost exclusively on this gun.

Suggestions?

Thanks.

Direct inpinged or gas piston upper? I'm thinking the former, as your typical gas piston will work with such a short barrel length.

It's been said that SBR's are not the best thing for the Stoner design...others argue but I think too many complaints would lead one to believe there is a limit to how short you can build a direct AR.

The ejector spring could be bad...even from the factory. I've had springs installed sideways in brand new BCG's and they did work and fail about the same frequency as you mentioned. Always start there and then look at the buffer spring.

With a can on the way, you'd better get to work on it now as I doubt the can will make it any better.

regular DI gas system. - my FFL has a post-sample 7.5" gun that runs like a scalded dog .. I don't believe there is a limit as to how short you can go.

My suspect is probably to replace the extractor spring.  Kind of wanted some ideas to confirm this though.

Everything I have read will lead me to believe a can would help a shorter barrel rather than hurt the performance.

how is the spring tension on the extractor? Just had to replace the springs in 4 BCGs. They had blue inserts and wimpy springs. Replaced them with Bravo company springs. Made all the difference in the world.
