I've seen online before a modification that someone suggested doing to the rear takedown pin where you tap the hole on the back of the receiver and capture the spring and detent with a set screw so that you don't lose or damage it if/when you remove the stock.  I think I even recall seeing someone listing "kits" for sale somewhere that included a tap and several set screws for the job.

Is this a bad idea?  It seems like if it was such a good idea, someone would be manufacturing lowers with it already done....but maybe not??  Would there be any real reason NOT to do it (other than it just being unnecessary)?

Any feedback is appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike W.

Thanks for the link.  I knew I had seen it and even searched, but I guess I didn't look hard enough!

You're alright. It was hidden away in the tacked threads.

Denny's Guns sells lower receivers with the mod already.

4-40 set screw and tap is all you need, works like a charm.

Went to the hardware store and picked up a 4-40 tap, and then down the street to the best nut/bolt place in my area and got a few of the screws.  Already "fixed" my four rifles, and have a few screws left over so I can do them for my buddies too if they want.

This truly is the way they SHOULD be.

Thanks for all of the replies.

Aero Precision has been doing this on their lowers for a while now.  I guess our are like that too then!

I'm thinking that Armalite's lowers are also threaded that way.

tactical innovations lowers does this.

Spikes lowers and Tactical Innovations lowers (which Global Tactical uses) also have them.

The mod is simple if done right - keep the tap straight, back it out, clean it and apply oil about every 1/2-full turn so you don't risk breaking it.  Test fit the new screw before trying to install the spring so you know you went deep enough for the face to sit flush with the lower.

On a side note:  Some 0-1/4" taps don't close small enough (yea, even though they say "0") to hold the small 4-40 tap.  The Irwins from Home Depot and American Vermont are the ones I have found that work the best.

When you insert the detent and spring, use a 1"x1/8 inch piece of clear tube over the spring.  Insert your 4-40 screw on the allen wrench through the tube, depressing the spring into the lower.  This acts as a guide and keeps the spring from bending and the screw from slipping off resulting it it becoming airborne.
