Does anyone know if there was any standardization of rack numbering on M16s? Standard stencil size, paint colors, etc?

I've got two sets of stocks painted now, one for dress, the other for casual wear, and I wanted to paint rack numbers on the "everyday" set.

Any got any pictures?

Probably white.

Here's a pic of the rack numbers painted on my 601 stock.

There is no standard, in USMC boot camp they were stencled on in big white numbers, in the fleet they were OD stencled small numbers. In the Army I have seen them stencled on, stuck on with a small plastic lable from a lable maker, marked with rack number, platoo, company, battalion, brigade on a big white address lable, wrote on with paint pens with colors coordinating with the platoon or the first number coordinating with the platoon, or both.

I've also seen the rack numbers engraved into the rear of the carry handle on the rifle.  There is no standard, just choose what you think looks best and go with it!

I've seen all sorts too.  Some of the ones I saw looked like they were done using those standard brass interlocking stencils we used on cruise boxes, tool chests and everything else.

In one USAR unit I was in the rack numbers were stamped on dog tags and attached to the rear sling swivel.

No standard at all.

I've seen stenciled red, stenciled blue, stenciled white, label maker marked, blue paint marker, red paint marker, white paint marker, etc, etc, etc, etc.

ETA:  I've been in the Army for 15+ years so shit changes quite a bit.

There have been dozens of uppers for sale with rack numbers on them, don't mangle parts when you can buy real ones already marked.

I still see units use admin/rack numbers that are stamped on dog tags. The tags are screwed to the butt stock. Paint pens are used to put admin numbers on everything(M9 bayo's, M22 bino's.....) Other wise Tommy Tentpeg would claim yours for his

Here's how our A1 stocks were marked in Beirut. Yellow adhesive numbers. My rifle was 92.

My apologies for the crappy pic. It's a scan from an old disc camera.

No apologies necessary, the picture is great and that was exactly what I was looking for.

Glad I could help. BTW, I'm not any of the guys in the pic.

ETA: The dog was "Sam". We got him when he was only a few weeks old. He was kidnapped by some tankers who named him "KO". He was featured in USA Today. He later came back to us. We couldn't take him home with us, so we passed him on to our relief. They euthanized him when they left Beirut. Poor Sam, he was a good dog.

Y'know, after I posted, I told myself I should have commented about Sam. I'm sorry to hear about him.

Thats cool! I bought an A1 upper last week and it took me a few days to notice that the rack number had been electropenciled in that area but really small. As soon as I saw that I wanted to paint the stock.

during the 80's both of my units used those Dymo Tapes for rack numbers. they always fell off in the field.
