Hey guys. went out today on probably my last shooting trip off the year. I take very good care of my guns. Always clean and lubed where needed. I use remington UMC ammo and have for along time right out of the original box. Not out of a ammo can or anything. Well today had probably three or four mag through it over a half hour period. Always let barrel cool after no more then two mags. I always have three or four guns to play with so it is nota big deal. I loaded my last magazine and no lie, can shoot golf balls at 100 yards with this gun.(RRA elite comp) I was shooting some bottles that are NEVER a problem to hit and al of a sudden, Cant hit them. So i shot maybe 15 more rounds out of it and was like man maybe my eye was weird. I get home and it appears to have a chip about half way down the barrell. WTF. How does this happen? Do you think this will be covered under the lifetime warranty? I am so upset about this. It was my first gun and I love this thing. What should i do? Any ideas what could cause this?

Thanks guys

Is the "chip" at 12 o'clock?

I not, please describe this better if possible...

[#2]
It appears to maybe be around 2 o'clock. maybe three quarter of the way down the barrel. If i run a cloth down the barrel it catches in this spot. I can see it with my eye. Why did you ask if it was around 12?

Is it a chrome lined barrel?  Might be flaking off. How many rounds through it?
11/14/2011 6:20:50 PM EDT
[#4]
Yes it is chrome lined. Honestly at most 600 rounds. Really i do take good care of my stuff. I am so upset about this.

Just wanted to make sure you weren't talking about the gas port hole that is drilled at 12 o'clock.

If that's not what it is, and it appears it's not from your description, I'll let someone smarter chime in with something more intelligent.

yep...its under warranty

Call up RRA and get a RMA number, send it in.
If something went wrong with the barrel they will fix it.

Its not a rust spot or anything is it?
11/14/2011 8:05:03 PM EDT
[#8]
Hey, No it is deff not a rust spot. Cleaned the barrel and it is still there. It seems to be around 2 o'clock. Looks like a chip in the barrel. Gun has always been cleaned after use. Maybe has 600 rounds through it. Always used UMC. I hope RRA is not like no this is something you did. It goes in original case in original bags every time it is taken out of the house. Sits in a safe otherwise. This gun has deff not been abused. Never gotten wet or put near dirt or any type of debris.

Don't worry about it, call up RRA and explain what you are seeing and ask to send it in.
Chances are pretty good you'll be taken care of.

Keep us updated with how it goes.

RRA will stand behind their products a take good care of you.  They are known for their good customer service.  There is a RRA section for issues like this in the "Industry"  Forum here on ARFCOM.  Post your issue there.  The RRA Mod. there is very responsive to people's issues.  He'll tell you what you need to do.

RRA's are usually very well built, especially the barrels.  Is there any chance that something like your sights, scope or scope mount came loose?

As others have alluded to, the only way to know for sure, and to get it repaired if necessary, is to contact our customer service folks at 866-980-7625.  Ask for technical.  They can either walk/talk you through some things to look at, or set you up for a return authorization (RMA).

Had the same issue just a different manufacturer (Stag). I am now on my 3rd upper. Sofar it appears okay. Only more rounds down range will tell. They did pay the freight round trip and replace the uppers. Good service in that respect. Oh forgot to mention, it was the chrome lining coming off.

Tech forums huh?  Nobody suggests trying different ammo or changing any number of simple variables before panicking and sending it back to the manufacturer?  Not giving it another try?  Not trying to isolate the issue and determine if it's the user or the rifle?  Interesting.

Reading is fundamental.

Unless you have a special ammunition that will fix rifle bores, and if so why are you holding out on us?

Sure sounds like you are looking at the gas port hole. Accurracy went down some after it got dirty. No surprise. Not really any kind of match type ammo. Maybe just a variation in lots between the ammo and a dirty gun.

I read it just fine.  Until a picture is posted showing a visible flaw in the bore, I'll stick with user error and him seeing the gas port.  Feel free to jump to conclusions though.

You may be right, but unlike you RRA is willing to look at it and sort the problem out.

A burr on the gas port should have been knocked off in 600 rounds.
And if its just the gas port the OP will learn thats all it is and no harm done.

Can you take a picture of the gas port to show the OP what one looks like?

My guess would be that your AR is mad at you because you baby it :D

Im sure RRA will take care of you.....sounds like a barrel issue.  Course UMC isn't the greatest ammo....though I don't think that's the issue.

RR is a great Co and I am sure you will be taken of...If it is the Chrome flaking and it is a good possibility as I have seen this happen to other chrome lined AR barrels too..I do not know if this is true but from what I have read, and no I do not believe everything I read...What I have read is that modern Chrome is crap and I  believe this is true...I believe the Goverment  the EPA have put alot of chemical restrictions on how chroming can be done in the modern day..Its not the chrome of say 30 years ago due the restrictions on the process..True or not I do not know but since I have seen this happen more than once to chrome lined ARs I will stick with non chromed only and do believe the "modern" chrome is crap....

As a side note, I have a Polish AKM and the chrome inside that barrel has dark patches.  It doesn't snag patches, but definitely has something going on with the chrome there.  This barrel is accurate (for AK standards).  So if this barrel has a dark spot where a patch catches, it sure sounds like chrome flaking to me.  Ever run your hand across an old metal car bumper with flaking chrome?  It catches the hand too.  I think someone is getting a brand new barrel.  You get a few hundred more rounds out of your gun now.  This is a not a catastrophe for you.  It happens and will be replaced.

Get er back.  Run er hard.

I have always used Hoppies #9.

Are there solvents that effected the chrome lining?

This thread started in November of 2011. Seems like plenty of time for RRA to get the rifle/barrel and decide how they'll handle it.

As a RRA owner, I'd love to know how the treated the customer. Anything yet? Keep us up to date please.

+1  OP, what did RRA say?

Sorry.

RRA offered several times to help out, apparently OP either did not contact them or got it straightened out and never posted anything about it. Since he has not logged in since Dec 1 of last year I'm going to lock this one.
