When was the AR-15 first avalible to purchase by civilians? I'm pretty sure it was an SP1 but just need the first year. |
| January 2, 1964 the first commercial Colt AR-15 was released for commercial sale.. Model R6000 SP-1 Sporter Rifle. The reference says that 23 rifles were built in 1963 with S/Ns SP00001 to SP00023. Serial numbers for 1964 production began with SP00101. This was the first Colt--if there was another brand that preceded it....??? |
