Call me stupid if you will, but how does one go about putting up pictures with a post?

The picture has to be "hosted" on a website that you can link to.

Then you can just hit the "image" button

When you click "reply" to add your post. Click on the "Board Code" button below the Smilies. The instructions for all kinds of nonsense are there.
