So, I'm looking for ideas on work benches, vises, tools and work areas etc. for a new build station.
I've built quite a few AR15's in the past, but I always used the vise, bench and tools at work. I'm no longer employed at my old job however, so now I have to come up with a complete setup at home. I've got most of the tools but I'd love to see some pics of you guys' work areas for inspiration. Pics of benches, vises and your tools. Plus I thought it would be kind of a cool thread for everyone to post pics of where the magic happens. There are pic threads of everything else on the planet, so why not? I apologize if there is already a pic thread like this out there. Or if this is in the wrong area (feel free to move it or delete it mods). Here is my small, humble area for the time being. I need an actual bench and a mounted vise, but this small little clamp on has done surprisingly well for just AR work.

Attached File Attached File All of the walls are now insulated and covered with peg board with 220V heaters installed, nice and toasty in the winter and opening the door in the summer cools things off nicely. Floors are covered with rubber so fatigue is nil. Machine tool box next to the mini mill that is now upgraded with DRO's and Air column and belt drive, larger motor. Lathe upgraded with larger power supply 4 inch 4 jaw chuck and the ability to work on barrels. Coming together nicely so that I can do a wide variety of projects. The bench my wife's upper is sitting on now has the reloading equipment installed and I can turn out quite a bit of reloaded ammo for our guns. |

Nothing innovative really. In the basement I have a bench that is always a mess. I keep most parts and tools in the tool box in this image. Any vice work I usually prep in the basement and go out to the garage and use the vice there for barrel nuts and muzzle devices and such. However, I do use a workmate as an off the bench work space. It sits right next to the bench. I did put that little block together. It allows for racking 3 ARs. That Lyman pad is useful. It does prevent little pins and springs from rolling around as well as provide space for separation.

I did want to add there are some Jim-dandy work spaces here. Plenty enough displayed here to get some good ideas. |
The easiest way I have found to install detent pins and springs is with a 1 gallon zip lock bag over everything, then if it shoots out, at least you can find it without crawling around on the floor with a flashlight..
A 1 gallon bag is large enough to get the upper into as well as your hands and the clevis pin or what ever you use. |

I try to keep spares and extra springs and pins... but of course the piece I (almost) lost was a washer that came with my Geissele handguard. I just picked it up and heard a little "tink" somewhere behind me and my heart sunk, lol. |
