Here are the Portuguese AR-10 mag photos and the Brownells SR-25 mag photos that I could not upload to my original thread on these mags.

Been there done that, he's a couple DPMS I modified back in 2010.

PS Generally, Sudanese mags are grey and Port mags are black

Didn't know that about the color of the original mags, all of mine are black. Thanks

Have you had any problems with the modified mags either dropping or going too high into the mag well?

I do not have any tightness. Your photo indicates the need for a little more tweeking. The most important part of cold setting the insertion bump is blocking/shimming the inside of the mag body. A piece of plate, a few HSS tooling blanks and a feeler gauge or two to get it tight works very well. When I modified mine I tried several strategies to get it completely flat, oxy/act torch and a vise grip, then a vise, finally cold with a 1" brass drift and a bmfh worked the best. This method was actually the least damaging, by only making the park shinny at the contact point, it also very effective flattening AR15 20s to fit prototype lowers.

Were those waffle mags only used by the Portuguese? I just picked up for them the other day. They are all marked Armalite Patents Pending on the floorplates.

All original AR10 issue mags were waffles with Armalite stamped floor plates, early ones were grey then later black, it is my perception that black out number grey 3-4 to 1. The earliest SR25 mags were also black waffles with off colored blank floor plates.

That's because the early SR25 mags were NOS AR10 mags that C. Reed Knight had hundreds of thousands of in a warehouse!

The way I do mine is to take a DPMS steel .308 magazine and use a Dremel tool with a thin cutting wheel (these are the thin ones that come 20 per tube) and I cut the mag slot all the way to the right (on medium to high speed) and stop at the edge of the magazine. I do this on top and of course on the bottom extending both to the edge. Then I just bend the newly created tab up and bend it back and forth until it comes off and the file out the rough spots. The Dremel makes a big difference and saves time. I then pound down the mag stop with a large diameter punch and hammer until it is flush with the mag body. Mine fit and function perfect and they drop free as well as hold the bolt open. Use the steel DPMS magazine and it will work great for you.

I remember when I could have bought AR-10 waffle magazines from Armex for $1.25 each by the 55 gallon barrel full back in 1989! Anyone have a time machine I can borrow?

I remember when you really could buy guns through the mail and the ads in the back of The American Rifleman. If I had a time machine you'd be waiting quite some time before I could lend it to you!
