I'm brand new to owning an AR type rifle. I'd never really liked how plasticy and star wars looking they are. I was in the gunshop the other day though and found one I really liked. Its a DMPS Hunter Gen 2 in 7.62 NATO. That is essentially an AR10 right? Anyway if felt really solid and didn't have all the plastic junk all over the barrel ... and since it was chambered in .308 I just had to take the plunge.
Now I'm extremely familiar with firearms and would consider myself an expert with systems like the M1 Garand, M1A, R700, R742/750, and other models ... as you can tell I prefer 30-06 chambered rifles and .308 as well. Because this is more assaulty rifley looking then my other firearms and people tend to hang all kinds of weird attachments on them so they look all military, I was wondering what kind of optics would work or be fitting. Are glass optics ok or because how the charging rod and other elements work red dot or other optics are preferred? Obviously I don't have optics on the M1's but the other rifles I tend to use glass. My intentions for the rifle are target shooting and hunting so that will drive my optics decision as well. I'd be looking at ranges between 50 - 300 yards and a price under $400 or so for now. Any suggestions? would a 6x18x44 be to big? Thanks for your comments. |

To me the 6x might be a little much for the 50 yard shots but you'll probably like the higher magnification when you stretch it out. I would recommend getting a LaRue MBT trigger the next time they go on sale and I'm sure you'll have yourself a shooter. |

Welcome to the club....I have a LR308 lite hunter. Yours is probably a G2...which is a completely new design from mine but has similar features...
You have a carbon fiber free float so you aren't going to be hanging anything on the front of it. The new models are offered in 20" and 16" from what I read, I'm assuming you have a 20". Either way, imho, a red dot would be a waste on a 308. Put an appropriate scope on it. You could get away with a 1-6x but I would go atleast a 2-10x. Personally I have a Primary Arms 4-16x44 mil dot on mine. It comes with a 2 stage trigger, I wouldn't recommend changing until you decide whether or not you like yours. It probably only came with 10 round mags. Go to 44mag.com. Order yourself some 20 round ASC mags, they work great, well made and allow for longer OAL than pmags and DPMS. They also have 5 rounders too if you need them. I had to get a couple to carry mine hunting this year. Lastly...one weakness of the rifle is the gas block is made of aluminum. Now supposedly the aluminum can eat away if you shoot a lot and cause failure. Not sure how many rounds that would take but as a precaution, I bought a steel gas block and threw it in the bin just in case. There is a history of these guns being over gassed, you may end up wanted to replace the block anyway with an adjustable block. Enjoy...mine seems to like 165 spitzer soft points and 178 gr amax if you want to whip up some loads. |

If more than target shooting, then 6-18 will be too much. For hunting on my 30-06 I use a older Nikon Buckmaster 3-9x40(no BDC). It's good for anything up to 300 yds with just a small holdover. Yes, the gun can take game out further, but I put food on my table, so I want to make the shot count. I hunt deer and the longest shot needed for me is 70yds. I use the lowest scope setting. I only use the higher power to count the points on a buck's rack(4 point min on one side) to be sure if legal.
If hunting coyotes/deer/elk/bear, I think no more than 16 magnification will be more than enough. 3-12 or 4-16 will put you in a very good sweet spot for that rifle. Nikon, Weaver, Vortex, Sightron, Leupold, Bushnell(Elite) will all have something that will fit your needs. Now, if you can find something w/side focus you can keep that scope down lower to bore center by using medium rings, for a very good cheek weld. |
| I live in the peoples republic of Massachusetts, the rifle is barely legal here as it is. If I add anything to the barrel (flash light, tri-pod, bayonet, etc it would be classified as an assault weapon. No magazines larger than 10 rounds ... and you need a special license for that. My simple little 10/22 scout rifle would be an illegal assault rifle of death with just a folding stock and pistol grip lol. Fucking liberals. |
