IMO figure out what your max budget is, and get the scope that does what you want to do at that price point. Obviously using reviews and comments to base your purchase on.

There are so many choices in scopes today (reticles, BDC, built in rangefinders, tube diameter, etc) that your budget is really the only thing that determines what you can get.

Don't cheap out on a scope. A cheap scope is more likely to fail in a shorter period of time (although everything will fail in time), and if you don't get what you want the first time, you will be looking to replace it in fairly short order in any case.

state your budget, and distance you plan on and any other specs you desire otherwise this is kinda a waste.

I recommend the Vortex Crossfire II 6-24x50. I just bought one off eBay for $225 and I like it.

This is the absolute best value you can get. Remember that 308 recoil is going to punish your scope. So what works for 5.56 might be questionable for 308. Wait for the 10% off coupon code and save yourself $64.

And you can get that scope for $210 shipped free from Midway right now...among a few other Vortex scopes.

This....I've this damn scope on my AR-10T.  I had a L&S M3 and it didn't shoot as well as the little Vortex. I also had a 6-24 PST on it before but I like the 2.5-10×32 the best...

I have a Gen I DPMS SASS and it's capable of reaching out and touching someone at well over 500 yards. I have a USO ST 10 on my SIG 716 and while it's a great scope I always feel I need more magnification past 500 yards. If you intend to shoot < 500 yards the 2-10X will most probably work for you. But if you intend to wring out the best in your SASS i'd recommend a variable scope with at least 15X.  That's what I ended up putting on my SASS. I'd recommend the Vortex Viper FFP either 4-16X50 or the 6-24X50 if your budget allows.

10x is plenty for 1000 yards, I rarely go above 16x at a mile. I'm always the "buy once, cry once" guy. It's best to get something nice from the start than upgrade later IMO.
