Hello everyone - I'm a new member here from central VA.  I'm about to start my first build and thought I'd share some info.  I'm still trying to figure out what length/style upper I want, but this is what I'm doing for the lower:

Stag Arms Lower Receiver
Daniel Defense LPK
Cheap UTG 6-pos Buttstock to start with plans on upgrading if necessary as funds allow.

As for the upper, I'd really like to build from parts but can't decide yet.  Definitely want a 5.56 upper with chrome lined barrel - but can't decide on carbine or rifle length yet, nor can I decide on manufacturer.  Too many decisions.

you're going down the wrong path... you will NOT save money in the long run building cheap and then upgrading... cheap parts have very poor resale value...

if that's what you plan on doing, you're better off buying a factory gun and upgrading it as money allows...

also, a DD LPK is like $80 by itself, if you're trying to stay cheap, go with a PSA lower build kit (LPK + milspec receiver extension + M4 stock) for $89 and skip the UTG stuff...

also, unless you have a Stag lower available locally, there are better options out there...

I never claimed I want to build the cheapest thing out there.  If so, I'd have gotten a PSA lower and LPK.

Stag lower to my door for $122, DD LPK for $76 to my door from PSA, UTG stock $40 to my door from Amazon.  Out of the three purchases made for the lower half, I was willing to spend on the reciever and the kit - not ready to drop a lot of dough for a great stock just yet so I bought the cheap one to get me up and running.  This is the path I have chosen - it's not right or wrong.

The lower had to go through ffl so factor in proper fees. You have to decide whats it for? How much cash and how fast you want it up and running. Upgrading as you go is fine keep the parts save for another build remember as king as the lower is mil spec id dosent really matter a brand as their all 7075t6 forged the only dif is logo on mag well. Allot of people bitch and moan about that but save some $$$ use on your upper or better yet ammo for example I bought a complete lower locally for 200$ with stag lpk and stock allso check at plum crazy I haven't herd anything bad perestroika but they are polymer so that's kinda iffy but with lifetime warenty?  Then I would look at DSARMS they have uppers from 240-310 no bolt so figure in 100 price dependent on barrelled chrome molly, lined or parked. Allot will chime in pitching a bitch and trust me I value quality as I was in Usmc but really there's no need to spend 1500$$ on a gun when you can piece togeather a nice functional Ar for 600 or so and upgrade stuff to way you like it because even factorry gun will need tweaking. Save the cash buy a nice optic. I've allways felt regaurdless of the gun spend the money on nice optic.  STAG! puts out some great stuff. Anyone saying otherwise is stuck on top tier brands specific. And keep in mind chances of going in comabat with it is ZERO.  I'm me if ya like!  I wouldent build from scratch your first AR do the math it just dosent add up good luck and remember have fun

Prices I quoted include FFL ($112 for the lower + $10 FFL xfer) and orders have already been placed.  I'm not really asking a question here yet, just sharing info.

Primary use will be for-fun plinking at 100 yds or less, but should be capable of much more should the need arise.  Based on what I read, a lower is a lower is a lower.  I felt like $112 for a Stag lower was a good deal, so i took it - besides, I like the deer head!

oh no don't get me wrong stag is GREAT! haven't herd anything wrong with stag or spikes good choice because the first thing people see is the roll mark if you havent ordered the LPK check out stag just as good triggers you would be blown away if you new who supplies parts for companies like some 'top" tear guns stay clear from dpms I just have a rule of thumb no dpms not really sure why but just dont like them

Stag does not put out "great stuff"... i've owned five stag lowers, two stag complete uppers, several LPKs, and other Stag/CMT parts and they are/were nothing but trouble...

OP, my point about the cheap stock is that your spending $80 on a "premium" LPK but buying a cheap $40 commercial stock kit of questionable origin to save some money, when you can spend $89 and get a decent LPK and better stock kit and save $30... it's an all around win for you... especially since you'll probably upgrade the trigger down the road anyway... no point in spending premium $$$ on a GI single stage trigger if you're only going to end up using the small parts

there is a right and wrong way to buy parts and build your first AR... your first mistake is not listening to others advice... good luck

what problems did you have with stag SPECIFICALLY! DID YOU DO THE INSTALL!   never had an issue with mine and a large majority! paying extra for mil spec stuff just because its branded by a name that is preceived as a less inferior product! a middle of the road brand is a middle of the road item! just depends on what the type of shooting your gonna do chances are you'll never take it into combat and if your not planning on competing  then there is no need to bye into the HYPE of peoples opinions of inferior products

hellbound - why did you keep getting stag lowers and other parts if they were nothing but trouble?

It's not that I am not listening to your advice.  I wasn't asking for you to approve my list of choices, simply stating what I have already purchased and plan on using to build my lower half.  I had a general budget in mind for the lower half.  I put most of that money into the lower and LPK - the guts of the lower half.  The remainder went to an inexpensive stock with decent reviews.  If it turns out that stock is complete junk, then I'll return it, or consider upgrading it at a later point in time.  For my initial use, it will likely function just fine.

How can there be a right or wrong way? I still don't get that.
