I'm sure that this has probably been asked a million times, but here goes....

My newest build project is that I want to build a M4 clone....  I have a new DoubeStar lower (my 5th) with a Del-Ton lower parts kit, a MagPul ASAP sling plate.  Will be ordering a Magpul UBR stock to finish out the lower.  SBR paperwork already in the works only waiting of the CLEO signature, then it should be in the mail to the ATF by then end of the week.

I know I have a few months before I can finish the build due to waiting on the SBR approval, but my question is, who makes a really good 14.5 inch upper with 1x7 twist, (this will go on said SBR lower, so I don't want a pinned/welded flash suppressor).  I've seen plenty of 14.5 inch 1x9.  But for all practical purposes, which is the better twist rate  1x9 or 1x7?? Typical ammo will be M193 and/or M855.

I cuurent have 8 other AR's.  All but one have 1x9 twist barrels. The other is a Colt SP1 with 1x14 twist barrel that I only shoot M193. See the photo below.

Any feedback would be appreciated.  thanks

Nice collection,

Why do you want a 1-7 ttwiest if you not going to go higher than 62grain.1-9 is good up to 69 grain?

Honestly, that was my question, is there an overwelming NEED to go for a faster twist rate?

I have 2 more builds I want to make.  One will be a 9mm or 40 S&W version, and the other I want a long range tack driver with a 20-24 inch bull barrel which will have the faster twist.

What can I say, I have the BRD pretty bad...  Besides, half the fun is building them, & when I die, my boys will get them all....

Fastest twist you need is 1 in 8.  1 in 7 is for tracers.  Bravo has a lot of 1 in 7 because it is what the .mil does (and it's great stuff, by the way), but 1 in 8 will stabilize about everything you might want to shoot out of it, and 1 in 9 will stabilize the 55 and 62 grains just fine.  It should stabilize 69 grain also, but if 69 grain was going to be the most common round, I would look for a 1 in 8.

.

Thats what i built, a 20"  on which i just changed the scope and a 9mm is on my sight probably for a fall project. Deff. will have to do a few more builds to cacht up with you though. May you live much, much longer so your boys will have nice selection. Are you adopting by any chance?

My understanding is that the 1-9 will be also good for the 45 and 50 grain, isnt that the case as, thought i read it somewhere.

Certainly down to 50 grain, and if I was only going to occassionally shoot 45 grain, then I'd still go with 1 in 9.  If I was only ever going to shoot 45 grain, with the occassional 55 grain, I might read up about 1 in 12s.
