I'm assembling my first ar build, so I'm quite new to all of this. My question may seem stupid, but I would like to know if I should grease/lube all of the upper/lower/bcg parts before any first use. There's a small of amount of oil originally from factory, but I'm sure that's not nearly sufficient.

Thanks for helping out a nube!

Yes, you should always lube the rifle, even when brand new.  Get some good quality stuff such as SLP 2000 EWL and it will stay on there longer without drying up or getting gummy.  Standard gun lube attracts dirt and dust and gets sticky.  Good luck with the new rifle!

Agreed.  I lube everything that moves.  LP works.  CLP works.  There's a shop near me that sells his own brand of synth lube meant for ARs.  I usually use that.

Some people like grease on the bolt carrier, hammer, etc.  I usually use some Tetra gun grease on the hammer face and carrier where the hammer contacts it.  Usually use dry lube on the buffer/tube.

Thanks to both of you for your suggestions!

Welcome, pennyrat.  Yes, you should put a small amount of lubricant on all moving parts in the AR.  The bolt and bolt carrier are the parts that need reapplication after every extended shooting session.  I too like Slip 2000, but a good substitute that is widely available is ordinary Mobil 1 synthetic motor oil, 10W-30 weight.  See the link below to a useful chart and good luck with your build - CW
