I am building my first lower and was wondering if there is a trick to getting the pivot pin and takedown pins in? i have large fingers that are getting in the way.
And does anyone know where i can get the detents for these i have now lost both!? Thanks |

LOL yea, that pivot pin detent will launch if you're not careful. You should be able to get a new one locally, wherever you are. It's is the most commonly launched part. Call any local gunshop, they should have one, and if they don't, shame on them.
I use a spare pivot pin and insert it from the right side of the receiver just enough to hold the detent in place while I insert the other pivot pin from the left. EDIT: Brownells sells a tool specifically for this task, but you don't really need it. It's an extra convenience, but a spare pivot pin works fine. The takedown pin detent installation won't give you the same trouble. |

For the pivot pin I use a 1/4" (or appropriately sized, don't remember if 1/4" is right right now) clevis pin. I push the clevis pin in from the left side of the receiver & rotate it till the hole lines up with the hole for the spring & detent. Then drop spring & detent in hole & push down with a paper clip (or something similar), twist the clevis pin so the spring & detent are captured. Next insert the pivot pin in & push the clevis pin out, the detent will fall right into place.
The take down pin should be no problem as it is never under pressure when being installed. |
