I'm thinking of getting a Matech[price is right!] for my flat-top 16" CAR. Since I shoot primarily at 50-100yds, is this practical? I won't be adding anything like an Eotech or Aimpoint for a while due to $ shortage. Any other products suggestions are welcome.TIA

The Matech is a good BUIS if the price is right.  It's large range adjustment knob is easier to manipulate while wearing gloves than the standard drum of more conventional designs.  And the range markings are facing toward you, not to the sides.  It's weakest point is the cross bolt and bracket.  Many people report breaking these and having no source for replacement parts.  This reportedly happens when soldiers over-torque it while messing with it unnecessarily.  I'm not certain, but I believe an AR15.com member is now machining replacement parts.  Maybe another poster will know who.  Or search the EE for Matech.

Another more conventional and inexpensive option is a ~$50-$100 detachable carry handle.  You can usually find plenty in the EE.

As for tight budget optics, You can get an older model, used Aimpoint in the ~$200 range or the Bushnell branded Eotech for about $225.
