Can someone explain this to me like I'm an idiot (don't tell anyone, but I actually AM an idiot): 1) With the prevalence of free float rails- and they've been around for years- why do so many military M16 pattern rifles still use non-free float rails? I could see the cost argument if there was actually much of a difference, which there isn't. 2) More specific to these Marine Recon M4s (which are sweet): why not just use an extended carbine rail instead of the clamp-on extenders? For instance: my Midwest extended carbine rail just required cutting off the delta ring and removing the weld spring. And it's free floated. Didn't have to dick with the barrel nut. And it's stable enough for a laser. I could mount an optic on if I really wanted to. |

Plus they’re moving to the M27 platform. Not gonna spend a bunch of money on a platform that’s going to be replaced soon. 2. Same as number one. |

Basically it comes down to specifications, until you can get a validated requirement that causes a change in specification it does not happen. After the initial fielding of IAR, the Marine Corps was trying to get an updated specification validated to justify a PIP (planned improvement program) for the A4 and M4 to include a free floating hand guard. In the grand scheme of things the increase in performance was not sufficient to justify the change. The only reason the M27 was fielded for all infantry like formations for the Marines was the close combat lethality task force and its temporary emphasis on what made infantry formations more lethal. |
In the real world off-campus, good marksmanship trumps good will.
Can't let this archive. I got another ergo rail, and I really enjoy the build and while absolutely not clone correct I wanted to make a lighter rifle. I just did a quick and dirty paint job the colors were way off from upper and lower. I have a better (not china) eotech on the way and magnifier, and I plan on a tlr 1 for a primary light. |

Has anyone gotten some time with the LaRue Tower of Power setup? I've gotten the Geissele mount, and a riser is on the way, but doing the math last night puts height over mount at >2", right? I know lots of people like 1.93" with LPVO's, with a new subset of people liking the 1.7", so I'm wondering if the Tower of Power is "too high" in practice, or if it's great for quick target acquisition at lower magnification. |
