I've come across various threads on different boards of people using oven cleaner to clean their guns...  wouldn't this mess up the aluminum in an AR? have any of you been brave enough to try this?

I've only used oven cleaner on old C&R rifles when I want to remove the cosmoline and the finish.  I would not use it on my ARs.

+1

I believe some oven cleaners can attack aluminum. Plus, you have so many better options for cleaners out there available to you.............. why take the chance.

bluing solutions work best for Al. It will clean it  crystal clear. DO NOT TRY THIS

WTF is up with all these short cut threads lately?

Cleaning a firearm is not a hard task that one should be looking for "so called" shortcuts.

so how do you get all of the oven cleaner off of the stock? simple rinsing for a few minutes?

once the oven cleaner dries is it inactive?

Do your self a favor, ok. Go buy a oven cleaner and some aluminum foil. Set a foot long sheet or foil on the ground and spray it with oven cleaner. It will turn black and start smoking, because it's eating away at the metal, burning it.

(Do not crinkle foil and spray a lot of this solution in a coke bottle, the explosion will hurt you and spray it everywhere. I know people will get the idea from me saying it smokes and burns the metal.)

That’s the message I’ve been trying to get across for the longest time.

Exactly.

I will have to agree with one of the above statements. With FBC and gun-scrubber, why waste time/money/take risks with an unknown cleaning agent designed for something entirely different than what you have in mind?

The times I have used it on a C&R, I have rinsed the entire rifle with water from the garden hose.  It works well, but there are also other methods.

Like Quib said, there are so many products made for cleaning firearms that it does not make sense to use anything else.

Quib time to throw out that homemade carbon scraper

Naaaaa....it's only an aluminum scraper! And I’m not too concerned with it scratching the finish on the inside of my bolt carrier anyway.

ETA: Or could I use a chrome touch-up pen on the inside of my carrier if it gets scratched?
