Great News that V7 Systems and 2A-Armament are both getting into the lightweight receiver arena. It's great to have options.
I am accepting samples to review. |

The upper doesn't anyway. The Aero Precision no FA upper is 6.37oz.. I'd venture to say the lower probably isn't going to be to impressive either. Doesn't look that way anyhow. |

............ I got a little fancy, and took my rifle buffer apart. I ended up with a 2.5oz. rifle buffer. So I dropped nearly 3oz. right there. How many weights did you remove and what did you use for spacers? I just bought the ARUL (which came with a rifle buffer and spring) to run with a JP LMOS bcg. I need to reduce the weight of the buffer and don't want to spend $60 on the JP reduced mass buffer if I don't have to. Any photos of the buffer internals? |

The JP LMOS is the next upgrade for this rifle. Which will make it drop another 3.5oz.. Did you get the AR-UL-E, or the AR-UL? The E model comes with a rifle buffer? I took 3 rifle buffers apart. Inside them you will find 1 aluminum spacer, and I think 4 steel inserts. I used all three aluminum spacers with the rubber pads. All said it was 2.5oz. total. I put the other two back together to weigh around their initial weight of 5.2oz.. No pics of the internals. But a pic of the buffer on the scale should suffice. I'll attribute the extra 1/8oz. to the grease that's on the outside of the buffer itself. I put white lithium on all my springs to help keep them quiet, and to help smooth the action.
ETA: You can get a TACCOM buffer for $25 http://www.taccom3g.com/UL_AR15_RECOIL_SYSTEM.html |
| I have the ARUL, not the E model which I considered but would be too short for me. It came with a standard rifle buffer. Since I don't have others to cannibalize spacers, I need to find something to put in there or buy a lightweight buffer. I am researching the taccom 3g now. It is cheaper and lighter than the JP, but it is a totally different two piece design from what I read about it. |

When I mount that, the Magpul plastic sights are coming off. Which weigh over 2oz.. Minus 2, and add 4.. |

It is cheaper and lighter than the JP, but it is a totally different two piece design from what I read about it. I have the Taccom3G ULWB now and was using the JP SCS and JP LMOS Buffer before ... not that much more noticeable in terms of recoil, but the SCS was nice and silent ... perhaps slightly smoother on the recoil (not necessarily softer). With the Taccom3G, you MUST have an adjustable gas block unless your rifle is really under-gassed (most are not). From my experience on a 16" or 14.5" barrels, you will definitely need it since the dwell time is so much. On my 16.5" rifle length gas, I have to have my adjustable gas block nearly opened up all the way to get bolt lock on an empty mag (shooting TulAmmo). |
|
@dwood - I would ask them to double-check the 14.5" DD pencil barrel's weight. The one I got (2 months ago), it was a 4.5" lightweight with the .750 block was 23.15oz. There was no longer an option for a .625" block. I think the only .625" block is on a 16" barrel (not 100% sure on that either).
Good luck! |

The Silent Captured Spring is heavier than a low mass rifle buffer and spring, from what I understand. I have not been able to find the weight of the SCS but one site described it as "about double" the buffer and spring. The Taccom is looking like it might be what I want to try. The buffer is less than half the price and lighter than the JP low mass buffer. Can you tell me how much it weighs and does it come with a spring (or is that exttra?) |

The SLR Sentrty 6 .625 gas block slides right on and the weight in my photo is correct, 20.5 oz. I was lucky to find a place that still had one. I considered buying all 3 that he had, but decided to leave some for others. EDIT: sometime last year DD went with .750 on all barrels to simplify inventory for gas blocks and FSBs, according to their post in the Industry forum. I was able to find new, old stock. |

A standard Rock River 9mm upper is 6.05 ounces without the the dust cover, and the one I weighed hasn't been drilled for a gas tube yet. It looks like I'm going to have to purchase a Mag Tactical upper and mill the Forward Assist and Brass Deflector off then fit a piece into the hole left from the Forward Assist. I've done it before on a Colt M-4 upper before the 9mm uppers were available, I just hate going to all that work AGAIN Mag Tactical SCREWED UP on their upper, they sure don't understand their target customers. |

I didn't go with the Mag Tac because I don't want a cast upper. I could see using the lower, which shouldn't really ever be stressed (even though the kaboom thread floating around really slams it), but for me, a cast upper is out.
I would be very hesitant milling material out of a cast upper receiver too, but that's just me. If I were to use the Mag Tac, I would just use the Adco delrin plug in the FA hole. If I didn't decide to order the Balios Lite due to ship in a few weeks, I would have gone with the AP without FA. I wanted to stick with billet or forged. I saved enough weight by finding a .625 DD middy 14.5 that I could afford a little more weight in the receivers. |

| I just found out that the taccom3g rifle buffer is solid and weighs only one ounce. The owner recommended a Taran Tactical reduced recoil spring with it. This would be 4 ounces lighter than a rifle buffer and 2 ounces lighter than the JP buffer. Can anyone who has used it comment on how it works? |

I have one, i haven't used it yet. it's two pieces, one sits at the back of the tube and the other in the place a normal buffer would, riding the spring back during cycling. It's very light. |

I guess it doesn't surprise me with how quickly the existing parts went out on clearance. That means they have overstock and aren't selling them as fast as they had hoped. |

My V7 is on the way no FA no Dust Cover but retains the case deflector hump....they did say they are going to put out an upper without the hump in the future....no definite date as of yet
Wt on V7 6.3 Oz on their scale they said just to be safe they will call it 6.4 on their web site just in case their scale is off.....will weigh mine when it gets here.. Just got mine threw her on the scale 6.3 Oz hopefully they will loose the hump for another couple of 3 oz or so. Wife's computer took a dump and she processes the pics so no pics today |

What I meant was lightweight versions. There are plenty of 0.625" gas blocks out there also including BCM, VLTOR, Armalite, DPMS, RRA, etc.
Many of the 0.625" gas blocks were simply 0.750" gas blocks with a smaller bore. This made them very heavy. Some of the newer 0.625" gas blocks have been re-engineered to specifically function at the smaller size. So the "thickness" is normal and not excessive, and the "rise" is higher proportionally than the 0.750" blocks. |

What is the piece at the back of the tube? |

Just got my V7 .625 with one screw hole & the cross pin hole pre drilled .7 Oz 6.3 Oz for the V7 upper with no F/A or port door/provision...(they gotta loose that hump though I hope they do) |

They must be fraid that if they put out a non fa upper, or hint that they might even, theyll never sell their current inventory. May as well melt em down boys

I gdt the point of using two pieces, brings the recriprocating mass sown even lower. I dont have any concerns about low mass bcg/buffer in termos of unlocking/ex/ej, so long as you have an adjustable gas system. My concern is in how much faster feeding occurs with those low mass parts and the standard spring. On one hand, you need the momentum to feed, on the other, i fear the bcg might out pase the ammo stack? Is there any possibilolity of the BCG outpacing thr magazine spring?? Has anyone put out a lower power action spring for use with LW carrier components? Is there margin in thhe momentum of a LW system at feeding? Could we afford to go with less spring pressure to keep cyclic rate(and bolt bounce) down? Thx |

Thx Not possible, the M-16 STANAG magazine is also used in the M-231 Firing Port weapon which has a cyclic rate of almost 1,400 rounds per minute. |

I don't think bolt bounce is a real concern with semi auto weapons. |
