I'm a lefty and I'm getting hit in the face with casings when I shoot. It seems to be worse with Monarch steel cased ammo; which is what I can afford to shoot regularly. Ideally, I'd like to have my casings eject at 3 oclock or even 2 oclock but I'd be fine with anything that doesn't involve them bouncing off my cheek.

I know the Monarch is dirty and underpowered but unfortunately, I'm not a wealthy guy. So it allows me to get to the range much more often than if I were shooting brass cased ammo.

I don't have any experience with heavier buffers. Would investing in one help?

I my self am left handed, I am also an armorer. I have never had to deal with this problem. When I shoot on my time I shoot with quality ammo. Buy a box and see if it works. A heavy buffer will need more energy to cycle and will likely lead to double feeds etc.

I have to guess that is a slabside rifle...............? With no case deflector?

In my exp. a carbine gas system will throw the casings forward like you want, and a rifle will toss them back at you. The rifles without the case deflectors will bounce them off your cheekbone if you aren't carefull. (left eye dominant, ask me how I know)

I theory,a heavier buffer would SLOW the process down a fraction and make it eject later in the cycle.

Maybe someone else can put that into words better than I did,

All of my ARs right now are carbines and all have brass deflectors.

If I position the carbine at a full 90 degree angle in more of a fighting stance, I'm usually fine. If I want to shoot across my body at all (the way I was trained at Camp Perry for competitive shooting), I get hit with casings.

I don't have problems with quality ammo other than I can't afford to shoot it as much as I would like.

I know you said finances were an issue, but maybe you could sell the upper and buy a lefty upper?

Here's some from DPMS, I don't know off hand if anyone else makes them.

I would not use a heavier buffer.  If anything, I might pick up a 15 cent rubber o-ring and try putting it in the extractor to give it more grip.  Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but that might be enough to hold onto the casings better and make them hit the brass deflector.

I run BCM or LMT bolts in all of my ARs and all have O-rings on the extractor spring.

I'm not really interested in buying a lefty upper or DPMS.

It looks like I need to either 1. just man up and deal with it or 2. start spending the coin on better ammo.

Thanks guys.

I'm new to this forum and I am ambidextrous.  I write, eat and perform most activities with my right hand, but I shoot pool, bows and arrows and apparently rifles south paw.  I'm starting to do the research on building an AR and noticed there were some lefty uppers and then I read this thread.  How important would you say getting a lefty upper is?  Seems like the selection is pretty sparse. Thanks.

Stag makes a nice lefty upper. I chose to just go with standard uppers and most of the time, it's fine. I wanted to train with what is readily available. Only when I'm shooting underpowered ammo in certain stances does it become an issue.

I shoot southpaw, and I have never had a problem with a rh rifle.  Hell, I've only ever had one lefty rifle, a savage 270.

give the heavy buffer a try. If it fixes your problem then great, and if it doesnt work out just swap it back. They aren't that expensive.

That's left eye dominant. I am the same way.

You won't NEED a lefty AR,and they are a lil more $$,and they have a different bolt, bolt carrier and upper receiver. I have lets just say more than one normal AR pattern rifle/carbines and one lefty.

It is soooooooo nice to have the brass going AWAY from your face
