I've recently purchased my first AR (Ruger SR-556) and plan for the most part keeping it original, with the exception of all the Mag-Pul gear I bought for it. Now I'm trying to decide which scope and mount suits me best. For the most part, I really enjoy shooting iron sights, so I will definitely need a QD scope mount. Also, I can't imagine ever needing a 300 yard shot, but I want the option to if need be. Scopes I'm considering are as follows:
Leupold Mark AR Mod 1 3-9X40MM P5 Dial Riflescope Mil-Dot $349.99 Redfield Battle Zone Rifle Scope 3-9X42MM TAC-MOA Reticle $199.99 Nikon M-223 Rifle Scope 3-12X42MM Side Focus BDC 600 Reticle $389.95 Leupold Mark AR Mod 1 Rifle Scope 3-9X40MM 1/10 MIL Adj Duplex $299.99 Some of these are a little more than I want to spend. I'm really leaning towards the Redfield, due to price, quality, the fact that it is made for 55 gr 5.56, and the relatively high user reviews. I am open to suggestions, however. I should probably mention that I'm a casual shooter at the range, and plan on using the gun for random small game hunts as well. Although I don't go to the range every week, I'm very much a perfectionist, and try to reflect this in my shooting. I really can't narrow down my options for a QD scope mount, but I need a combination that will hold zero. The scope has to be matte black, and absolutely no batteries. |
| Start here SWFA Nikon P 223 w/mount $199 great little starter package. |

I have the Nikon P-223 and I think it is a fine scope for the money when our budget dominates our purchase (as this is the case with most of us). Mine holds zero and the glass is clear. I like the BDC reticle.
I do not like the Nikon P223 mount. You will have to take your BUIS off to remove the mount. I have not used the Nikon M223 mount. I do like and have the Leupold IMS mount which is similar and you can remove it without removing your BUIS. How much money can you spend? You have listed rifle scopes with a big difference in price. If you can state your budget, you will be able to get better info. |

Skip the Nikon P223 and the Redfield Battle Zone.
Look at the Nikon M223, any of the Leupolds and Vortex Viper scopes in the same price range. Nikon, Leupold, and Vortex all sell a one piece mount for about $100. I think you will like the Leupold mount the the best. |
