I bought a EOTech 512 today, mounted it onto my Colt LE6920, and promptly discovered there was not enough room to mount a fold-down rear site behind it. So, now I am going to have to replace my handguards. I currently have the fat stock handguard on my rifle and want to buy a four rail replacement, where the top rail will be even with the rail on my upper. Anyone know of a good quality four rail handguard that will fit my needs? |

I'd like to throw this out there again to see if anyone has more information. More specifically, I am looking for a 4-rail replacement for the oversized double heat shield handguards that came with my Colt 6920. I'd like the top rail on the new handguards to line up exactly with the rail of my upper, so I can move my EOTech site forward and stablize it on the handguard. |

Well, there are a couple ways to look at this. If all you want is a railed handguard that will be at the same height as the rail on your receiver, you can pretty much choose any 2-piece handguard out there. The only one that I know is NOT the same height is the one made by Surefire. I would personally recomend a Knight's Armament Company (KAC) RAS. It is in use by the US military right now and is the original and most robust/rigid railed handguard replacement out there. You will have a small gap between the receiver and the handguard rails for the delta ring, but everything will line up. Another good option is the Midwest Industries (MI) #17 railed handguard. It is also a drop-in replacement. It is not as stable as the KAC RAS, but you will most likely have the Eotech anchored on the receiver with only a little bit protruding out to the handguards. So, it shouldn't matter. The best thing about the MI #17 is that it is half the price of the KAC. The other option you can go with is the monolithic rail type. I have the KAC RAS mentioned above on one of my AR's and it is great, but I also have the Troy MRF-C mentioned by the other poster on another one of my AR's. The Troy MRF-C is a great rail and is sturdy as hell. The nice thing about it is that it provides an uninterupted rail on the top of your rifle. Basically, you will have picatinny rail from your charging handle all the way to your front sight base, allowing you to mount your accessories anywhere! This setup gives you the most freedom, but is a bit more difficult to install. Because the rail gives you a monolithic-type platform, it needs to take the place of the delta ring. This means you will have to modify your rifle by either removing the front sight base assembly and sliding the delta ring and spring off, or yo uwill have to use a dremel tool to cut the delta ring off and then remove the spring. This is not that hard to do if you are paitent and go slow. The Troy MRF-C clamps to the barrel nut and provides you with a free-floating barrel which some say is more accurate. As for quality: you can't go wrong with KAC, Troy, Daniel Defense, or Larue (larue will require a lot more disassembly of the weapon for installation, but is one of highest quality freefloat rails out there. I have one on another AR and it is fantastic!) MI, YHM, and Surefire are good too, but are not as stable. Good luck. |

Thank you to everyone for their suggestions. I ended up going with the Knights Armament RAS (Part# 98064). I do have a small gap between the upper rail and the handguard, but I do not even notice it. This is a spendy handguard, but it is solid, very easy to install and forme, was the best choice. I bought it because the military uses it and it has an aluminum core for added heat protection. If you consider spending the money for it, I recommend you call SAW and buy it from them. Thanks again. |
