Anyone read the new GUNS mag? There's an article in it where their AR guy talks about using graphite in the AR. I could swear that I've been told graphite was not good for the AR because of the Aluminium? Anyone else hear this, or just me?

Thats what I thought. A gun rag giving out bad info, who would have thought?

I have heard of using dry graphite powder in loaded mags.

Only mag that needs the G is a Beta-C.

My locksmith friend says don't use it in locks either.
It is hygroscopic and traps moisture.

When I asked him what I should use, he said, "Gun oil".

Some swear that galvanic corrosion is possible when aluminum comes in contact with graphite, but I'd say that it would take something else in the mix such as salt water, etc. I'm no expert on corrosion, but I can say that in armorer's class, we were taught to use Permatex Anti-Seize (which contains graphite) on barrel nuts. I've used it on my M16 with no detrimental effects. Not to mention that the Beta-C mags require graphite powder as a lubricant.

So you think it will act as a fine sand and slowly grind down parts? Hmmm I wonder if any body has an old working AR and could degrease it and keep it lubed with graphite just to see what happens???

it would not grind but corriode.

Seen it happen at a plant i worked in. Maintance in all there wisdom used graphite spray lube on Al molds, 6 months later needed new molds.

you will not see it in an ar as long as use use an oil or grease for lube as the lube keeps the graphite in suspension keeping contact from happening.

If the Al is verry massive in comparesion to the graphite there is less of a chance of recation causing any real harm. ie spark plugs in an Al block.
