So I took out my BGCs from both my Bushmasters and inspected the gas key staking on them and decided it was inadequate. I read thru Quib's guide and checked the torque on the screws and then re-staked the screws. On my first try, I used a chisel that I filed down to make it dull. However, I should have filed it down further, to increase the striking area of the chisel, because I felt it was too narrow after I staked my first BCG. I proceeded to use a punch to stake my second BCG and that turned out much better.

Anyway, on my first staking attempt using the chisel, I accidently chipped slightly at the upper edge of the lower side of the carrier key. There are no burrs that I could see. Now, I thought I recalled Quib's guide or another advising against this. It is really not that large of spot, but I am concerned about it.

I have not fired the gun yet after the staking, but have I cycled the bolt maybe 5-7 times for function check. So, will that little chip on the upper edge of the lower section of the gas key be a problem at all in causing any damage inside the upper receiver ?

Here's the pictures:

I'm sorry for the poor image quality.

It is impossible to properly stake a gas key by hand. If your manufacturer is not doing it properly at the factory, you aren't going to get it done in your garage.
