I've found the function tests under guides, lower receiver assembly and the sticky in the build it yourself thread, but I thought I saw some function tests that you do at the range with live ammo after the dry fire tests? I can't remember where those were. Maybe a youtube, midway or brownells video that I had watched or some other site. Does anyone know where I can find those? Are they necessary?

My punisher lower (the last piece of the puzzle) comes today so I can finally shoot my first AR!

If all of the function checks work ok, and the dry firing also works ok and you feel confident to move on to live ammo then you need to follow the break in procedure for the barrel.

Check the procedure for your barrel.  Most are basically fire ten rounds then clean, repeat for fifty or sixty rounds.  Some do call for cleaning after every round for the first few so it is important to follow the manufacturers instructions.

The only other thing I can think to do is to use a go/no go/field guage in it, if you have access to them.

Here is what I do with any new semi auto gun after I do the basic dry fire tests

1) load one round into magazine - fire round to test function of fire control, and to see if action does as it should (on AR's - lock bolt back, etc)

If all goes as expected...

2)  load two rounds into magazine - fire one round to see if action functions as expected without firing the second round until you pull the trigger again.

If all goes as expected...

3) you are now clear to load as many rounds in the magazine as you want - use whatever barrel break-in procedure the barrel manufacturer suggests.

4) enjoy new gun.

This is what I do as well.

One little thing to check is your bolt travel as well.  Split the lower and upper.  Take you bcg out of the upper and with the buffer and spring in the extension/buffer tube, push the bcg down the extension and confirm the back of the carrier key does not run into the receiver.
