I am a newb, so I just want someone to clear this up for me. What exactly is "free float" and how does it help you?

The barrel is basically only attached to the upper receiver at the barrel nut. On a typical ar the two piece handguards put pressure on the barrel at the barrel nut and near the front sight where the handguards are inserted. Free floating the barrel reduces the pressure points on the barrel to improve harmonics and hopefully, in most cases improve accuracy.

Oh ok, that sounds like a great modification. Is there much gunsmithing involved?

If you can turn a wrench there is no gunsmithing involved. You just replace the existing forend with a free float tube.

Some Free Floaters may require a little more work than others. Some require you to remove the Muzzle Device, Front Sight Base and even the Delta Parts and Barrel Nut. Others may be easier to install with fewer parts to remove. Alot out there to choose from, Good Luck !!

Here's a pic of AR #1.  The tube covers the barrel but doesn't touch it anywhere.  That is what free floating means.  Gun is scary accurate.  Most rifles AR or otherwise benefit from free floating the barrel.
I added this tube in my garage in under an hour.
