My BCG is due to arrive this wednesday, and my build will be complete. I have enjoyed learning as well as building, I will post pics when its all assembled.
My question is. Prior to sending my first round down the pipe, how do i prepare my AR? Lube/Grease? any type of dry runs that need to be done? How many rounds before a full disassemble and cleaning are recommended? Just kinda nervous and dont want to damage anything, and I have no friends who share this hobby i can have with me at my first shooting. I appreciate all your help |
| Make sure everything is clean, esp the chamber and bore. Then buy a quart of Mobil 1 motor oil, 10QW-40 weight. Apply per the M16 lubrication chart, esp the bolt, cam pin and the little rails the carrier has contacting the inside of the upper receiver. A little swap on the face of the hammer does it. Good luck and let us know how it shoots. - CW |

I always clean/oil a new build before I shoot it. Also I clean any gun after any time its used. Thats just me. If you have little experience get on the youtube. Im sure other guys will post with more details. Fuck that!! I've got a couple that might get cleaned once a year if their lucky. I do Lube them every time I shoot them. More barrels are ruined by improper cleaning than by shooting.
Get your self a JP bore guide and a quality 1 piece cleaning rod. Never clean from the front. |

As was said - Completely strip and clean BCG/Upper/Barrel and lube properly before shooting for the first time.
Personally I don't clean mine until I get bored and say "Today would be a good day for meditation" and start cleaning. You ain't gonna damage anything as long as you clean it properly with the proper tools. Use 1 piece bore rods - always clean in the direction the bullet travels. Or use a bore snake (I use a bore snake for half assed cleaning jobs when I feel a LITTLE guilty my Larue has been covered in its own filth for months) still should do a REAL bore clean periodically. Never use CHLORINATED brake cleaner - non chlorinated is fine and does a damn good job of cleaning BCG's (remember to lube after and remove the rubber and plastic bits before hitting with BC. Other than that have fun and bring a friend who isn't into it... pretty soon they will catch the infection ETA and for GOD'S SAKE do not oil up your receivers and leave them that way - if you want to rub a little oil on them thats fine but wipe the damn things off, aluminum doesn't rust and it looks horrible and greasy.
