hey guys, I am a former SAR 1 owner. After being severely disappointed with its performance and accuracy, I want to get into something real...An AR. Not to say that the AK variants are worthless, they serve their own purposes, but didnt satisfy my needs. My primary intent is to have a target/varmint rifle that will compete with other .223 varmint rifles (such as a winchester 70 or a rem 700). I do not mind paying the cash for a nice setup, but I was wondering if I could achieve the accuracy of a Bushmaster Varminter with a gun assembled by myself....if so, what brand/kits do you all recommend. I am looking for a flat top receiver, 24" barrell free floater....please give me some advice |

Cerecke, the SAR 1 is probably the worst shooting of all the Roms, fwiw. I've got all 3, and the SAR 3 shoots the best, but still not in the same zip code as my ARs. The best shooting AR I've ever seen is a Les Baer Model that I see at the range from time to time. I've watched the guy shoot consistant groups about the size of my little fingernail...and I've got small hands. I figure those groups are about .350 or smaller, but that's a $2000 rifle! My most accurate/consistent AR is my trusty old Eagle/Armalite combo, which shoots sub moa every time out...really. Now, if you're looking to get the Les Baer kind of accuracy, I don't think you'll be able to do it yourself...but you should be able to build something as good as a stock off the shelf Armalite or Bushmaster. RRA's complete standard 24" Varmint upper goes for $500 list; you should be able to get that for around $450 street price. At that point, I'm not sure you're gonna save that much building an upper yourself. I think I paid around $430 for my 16" RRA varming upper, not 100% certain. You'll save a couple of bucks doing the lower yourself, around $50 I guess depending on the lower. Once again, though, if you have to pay $125 for a stripped lower, $50 or so for the parts kit, $30 for furniture AND another $20 or so for buffer/spring/tube, etc, I don't know that you're saving all that much. I don't know where you live, or what prices are like in your area, but you *should* be able to snag a lower for no more $250 assuming you don't want a match trigger, and the RRA Varmint upper for say $450...figure another $30 for taxes/FFL if needed, and you're still only looking at no more than $750. |
