Thinking about building my first AR and got an email from PSA that they have the PSA Melonite Freedom Keymod Lightweight Upper on sale for $279.99
Seems like a pretty good deal but I don't know about the lightweight barrel and whether I should jump on it with the premium BCG that they also have a sale or if I should wait. General purpose would be for just some plinking/target shooting at the range, nothing fancy, basically just a gun for some fun. BCG: http://palmettostatearmory.com/psa-5-56-premium-hpt-mpi-full-auto-bolt-carrier-group-no-logo-39339.html Upper: http://palmettostatearmory.com/psa-16-mid-length-5-56-nato-1-7-melonite-freedom-keymod-lightweight-upper-no-bcg-or-ch.html Thinking about a Aero receiver, probably a PSA LPK and probably Magpul stock of some kind. Maybe upgrade to the AGL Trigger if I don't like the one that comes with the LPK. Also not sure about optics at this point. That would be something I'll have to research but I think I'd start with some kind of iron sight and take my time looking into the others. |

most everyone here will tell you to get their Premium line as the barrels are made by FN. You could buy a complete rifle kit and be done with it

Looks like a pretty good price to me for the Upper - just completed my first build this last weekend, and the upper cost me considerably more for possibly NOT considerably better components. I looked at AERO - they have nicely finished products, but (like you, it sounds) I really want a functional gun that I can shoot, and it was hard for me to justify beyond Anderson, because I believe it will function just as well. Perhaps later, when my wife has gotten fully over the first build, I'll upgrade the polish for my second. I suspect that if it’s just for shooting, and not too serious, you can buy the assembled upper & lower for less cost than the individual components, unless you have a really good "in" with a supplier. It was fun to build from parts, though.

| I don't think you will be disappointed. I would go ahead and grab the PSA BCG. Also I think they have the PSA enhanced FCG on sale. If you are thinking about the ALG I have two of the PSA's and they are just as nice as my ALG triggers. I can't tell a difference between them. |

| I just helped a friend build his first AR15 last weekend using the PSA MOE Freedom rifle kit with 13.5" keymod that was on sale during easter and a cheapo $50 anderson lower. We went out and shot it the day after with minimum cleaning and some lubing. It worked like charm without zero malfunction. There was a set screw kn the handguar that was backing out but upon inspection there was no loctite on it so we just retightened it. If it continues to come some loctite will definitely stop it. The handguard was still solid. Not sure what that screw was for as there are 2 other big hex screws. |

I have the PSA Premium 16" Carbine upper that I bought about 1.5 months back. I am quite happy with it so far and did a review of it here. The upper with BCG was $379 at the time of purchase, so all I had to add was a rear sight to get a functioning rifle. The kit that Duke mentioned uses that upper and adds an LPK and stock kit. All you need to add is a rear sight and a lower and you'd have a pretty solid rifle. I am personally not a fan of the carbine stocks, and if you don't want the standard one it might be better to get just the upper. |
