i recently decided that instead of buying a rifle premade that i would build one myself (with the help of an experienced ar builder) so that i can get exactly what i want. the only problem is that there are so many options that i can't decide on what i want. the main if not only use for this gun will be for use at shooting ranges, no home defense or cqb. would ya'll recommend going with a 16 or 20 inch varmint kit (i plan on putting a lot of rounds through it with each trip the the range), or a 16 CAR. i'm trying to keep the price around $600-$800, so if you guys know of some sites with good prices on kits or lower receivers, and have some good tips/advice, please let me know. thanks

Del-Ton is having a sale right now for DTI M4 upper for $355 or $400 w/ chrome barrel.
I will have right at $900 in mine, but I went with a few higher priced parts because I got exactly what I wanted.
DTI upper- $400
DS lower- $99(but you must have a shop with a FFL local)
LPK- $60
M4 6 POS=$75
All that you are right at $634 and easily obtained in the EE section. Then you need some ammo.

yeah, i have a local gunshop who will take care of ordering a receiver, and i work for a sporting goods store who sells plenty of the ammo, so im good in those areas. i just wanted to make sure i wasn't buying crap parts, as i have seen other people have had that misfortune because they saw a lower price tag somewhere and didnt know what they were really ordering. any other input/suggestions are more than welcome.

I love my Del-Ton midlength upper, so I'll second them.

Don't forget to add magazines and a rear sight (if flat top) of some sort to the list.
Perhaps an optic of some sort, I love my EOTech 512.

ETA: don't forget to order the lower seperate from the upper or you'll have to pay the pesky Federal Excise Tax.

yeah, i'm definitely planning on going with the flat top so that i can put a scope on now, and then possibly an eotech down the line. thanks for pointing out about the excise tax, i didnt know about that. as of right now the parts id be ordering would be coming from different places, so i wouldnt have to pay the tax, but thanks for informing me on it because i didnt know about it.

1st, welcome to the site

second, decide what your purpose for the rifle is or which you will be utilyzing it more if ever (I.e: CQB or target/varmiter)

3rd, i'll second del-ton

to keep the price down but quality up, i'd check the EE< and the industrial area--ADCO, BCUSA, Eaglefirearms.net, etc are some other great dealers

if you want a top m4 build, i'd also look into a complete stag upper and lower and just snap em together...

quick question while i'm gathering my parts. does anybody know off hand about how long an ar with a 24" barrel and a standard a2 stock might be?
