Well, after lurking for a while, I'm finally gearing up for my first build.  There are just a few things I want to get straight first
1) what are the primary factors affecting accuracy
2) are the parts from different manufacturers compatible - can I mix and match freely
3) is a barrel wtih M4 feed ramps better than one with rifle feed ramps, or does it matter (I've seen the pics of how they're "structurally" different, but does it make a difference?)

Any help before I start laying out cash is greatly appreciated.

1.  Barrel / ammunition / shooter
2.  Yes except Colt lowers.  Different take down pin size on some of them.
3.  M4 feed ramps are not really necessary IMO (on an semi).  Either or but make sure that if you have a receiver with M4 ramps, you need a barrel that has an M4 extesion.

A M4 ramped receiver with a standard rifle extension = bad!

What he said... with a few additions:

When mixing and matching parts... Colt is the big "bastard" to look out for.... make sure you understand their large hole pivolt pins on lowers and uppers, and their large diameter FCG pin sizes on some lowers.

Other than that, the only other thing to watch out for is the M4 feedramp cuts..... if you really feel you want these, just make sure, if you get a receiver with M4 ramp cuts, you MUST get a barrel with M4 cuts.... or you will have problems.   A receiver without M4 cuts can take either barrel with or without them.
