Hello,
Optics Help/Advice I have purchased my first AR (Colt 6940) and I was looking for a scope that will not break the bank but will provide the proper sighting. (My budget is between $100-$300) I intend to use the rifle for range shooting (between 50-300 yards) and the occasional coyote hunt up north. Looking for a scope that has a zoom around 3-9x range. (I think, I'm new to this) I would like to have the ability to create small groupings at 100 (9x) but also be able to fire somewhat quickly and accurately at 50 @the range standing w/o bags. I would like to keep the scope short if possible, below 10 inches of length looks better IMO for this rifle from what I have seen. trying to keep it tactical as possible./not strictly a varmint rifle. I am new to the optics world as all of my other rifles have been handed down with scopes attached. Out of all of the forums I have been lurking this one has been the most helpful so that is why I posted here. I have never believed in throwing ammo down range first with the thought of accuracy second. I get enjoyment out of being as precise as possible. Thank You, CaptainInsano11 |

Quoted: an acog isnt between $100-$300I dont know a whole lot about actual scopes, but I love my Acog.. Hope it helps. for the given price, i would say a lower powered nikon or burris. i would just practice with your irons until youre comfortable with them and save up more for something nicer. |

I would suggest this also. ACOGs start around $800 and up depending on the model. Saving for the optic you REALLY want is the way to go. If not, you will never quite be happy with what you settle for in your price range. |

I have this and am very happy with it
http://www.nikonsportoptics.com/Products/Riflescopes/8487/M-223-2-8x32-with-BDC-600-Reticle.html#tab-ProductDetail.ProductTabs.Overview But buy it here: http://primaryarms.com/product.sc?productId=594&categoryId=157 Cheapest price I have found. Just in your price range. You will still need rings though. It is not quite a tactical scope at 11.5" but it is a good scope none the less. IMHO any decent tactical (small) scope will run you a lot more $. I have read good things about Primary Arms branded scopes. Longer still but WAY cheaper. At $80 its hard not to try it out and see if everybody is right about it's quality. |

I found this one on Burris website http://www.burrisoptics.com/timberline1.html#3x9x Is it any good? its only 10 inches and in my price range. |

I have read conflicting reviews about Burris, on their lower priced optics. I like finger turrets and a BDC or rangefinder reticle. Nikon has both, all be it 2-3x more $. If you are looking in that size and price range take a look at Osprey. They also have mixed reviews but I have one and I have to say, it is not bad for a $100 optic. It is mounted on my 7.62 AR and has held up nicely. I believe Natchez has an Osprey Compact 3-9x rangefinder reticle for $109 right now. It is only 9.5" long.
Link to info on it (cheaper at Natchez) http://www.opticsplanet.net/osprey-3-9x42mm-compact-illuminated-rubber-ar-riflescope.html The one thing I have to say about "less expensive" scopes is that the eye relief can suck pretty badly at higher powers. They are easier to "blackout" than better scopes. Lesser quality optics I can live with (my life does not depend on them now) but bad eye relief makes for an unpleasant range trip I bought the Nikon because it was the best scope I can afford. Look on opticsplanet.com. They have almost all rifle scopes listed with real owner reviews. Go from there. |
