The downward motion that the Troy mag release employs does not work because the lip on the mag well gets in the way. I think the best option would probably the Knight's Armament. https://imageshack.com/a/img922/3518/mz1SPz.jpg still cant find one in wood for a good price :-\ |

Been reading through this thread for a while and I'm thinking of diving into a SCR.
I think that a 300BO pistol will be what I put together. I'm trying to figure out which upper to use. I would like to find a side charging upper with a non-reciprocating handle. Which would you recommend? Why? |

I still can't find any info on a .458 SOCOM BCG for the Ares; I'm assuming that I may have to get a standard .458 SOCOM BCG and cut it down and tap holes for the rat tail. |

This is what I'm referring to.
https://www.brownells.com/rifle-parts/receiver-parts/receivers/upper-receivers/brn-180-ar-15-complete-upper-receiver-assembly-prod122861.aspx?avs%7cManufacturer_1=brownells It does not take a typical AR bolt assembly, no need for a buffer tube, so theoretically you should be able to use it on an SCR lower. |

So from what I can see, no the BRN-180 upper will not fit the SCR without significant modification. Since the SCR buffer system is not needed, one could remove the buffer and spring, and machine a cavity/relief in the lower to accept the BRN-180 upper. See this image of the protrusion I am referencing:

If you've ever tried to close an normal AR upper and BCG on an SCR, you know that the BCG prevents the upper from closing fully. | Law tactical is doing a self contained bolt carrier setup like the AR180 bolt that might work with the SCR lower too with some work. That's my plan with my lower, then machine a plug to replace the action tube to accept a stock bolt, then add a Magpul 870 stock. Boom.... |

I've been tinkering with an upper like your zm weapons inspired one too. I want a side charging upper instead of the rear charging handle though. |

If you find a source for Matrix Side Chargers please let me know. I need another.
On modifying certain uppers/BCG's for SCR lowers, just had to do this for a M261 .22 subcaliber device. Used a belt sander to radius the rear bottom edge of the M261 "carrier" to close on the SCR lower. Photo to follow... |

So, you have a .22 lr converted SCR now? And the recoil system is self-contained within the upper receiver?
Please show more. Edit: I know that M261 is a drop-in conversion, so assume that this can be swapped back-and-forth. |

The ergonomics are intuitive, and the handling is so natural. The drill and tap is easy. I did mine with a drill press and hand tap. If you have a modicum of shop skill its not hard. Heres how I did it. Dupe pic but whatever. Attached File Eta: if youre dead set on a non-reciprocating; I love ASA but since they closed shop a Gibbz C4 is a hot ticket. |

The SCR carrier has some reinforcement around the pivot holes which doesn't exist on the Stag. Machinist who did it for me said he could move the hole location up at bit, ~.030, to gain a bit of reinforcement. I was concerned about FP clearance. He said he could machine the FP if needed. He ended up raising the holes about .010, relative to the SCR, so no FP milling was necessary. In this pic you can see the reinforcement. https://i.imgur.com/c4H2QEq.jpg?2 The difference in reinforcement around the pivot pin holes remains an area of concern in terms of long term viability. One suggestion was to build up the Stag area with a welder. The machinist said he'd worry about the effect this would have on the carrier's hardened steel. The force applied to the pivot hole by the pivot pin is maximum at gas expansion, against the forward semicircle of the pivot hole. This area on the Stag is comparable to the SCR. I contacted Fightlite about the reinforced area, but they wouldn't let me talk to their engineer. Anyway, after about 50 rounds I don't see any signs of deformity in the Stag carrier around the pin holes as yet. https://i.imgur.com/iLcVdPl.jpg?1 Here's the Stag with strut. https://i.imgur.com/qHeHiHm.jpg?1 |

Originally Posted By 70runner: Exactly what my machinist said. If I understand your question, the carrier motion is damped/reversed by action spring tension. Does the spring plunger bottom out in the tube, similar to an AR buffer? Does the spring coil-bind in the spring tube? Does the carrier stop against something in top of the lower? There must be something that mechanically limits the rearward travel of the carrier. If it's in the spring tube, then the spring strut, and thereby that pivot pin in the carrier takes that impulse. if it's at the rear of the carrier, then the pin doesn't see the impact. |
