I am curious as to how the weight/rigidity compares between these 3 extractor springs: 1. Colt Carbine Extractor Spring (black insert) 2. SAW Heavy Duty Extractor Spring 3. Wolff Extra Power Extractor Spring And don't think you can say an RRA/DPMS/BM/Armalite extractor spring with a black insert is the same as the Colt. There are major variances, and I am talking about COLT MANUFACTURED CARBINE EXTRACTOR SPRING. I am not saying I am not interested to see what the other manufacturers provide as far as extractor springs, but if it's an RRA part, call it an RRA part, etc. TIA. |

Very good sources have reported major variances in extractor spring weights, even when comparing extractor springs from the same companies. |

Below is a picture of the extractor springs I have at hand. ( Hard to get a good close up with the old camera ) 1. DPMS original- typical for most mfg. 2. Model 1 Sales Extra Power 3. Wolff Extra Power 4. Colt factory M4 5. SAW Sales Extra Power (painted green, but green starting to wear off) I do not have the capability to measure the stiffness coefficient, but I will share my subjective judgement and experiences with AR extractor springs. As you will note, there are considerable differences in appearance and likewise in stiffness. They vary in cost from $1.00 to $5.00 with insert. I know of no standard for extra power extractor springs. I find it adviseable to replace all extractor springs on 16" barrel rifles. Sooner or later, it's gonna get ya and you will be back here posting and asking what the problem is and getting all sorts of ill advised answers. I use the black insert because they are $0.50 each and identify the spring as "extra power". In my opinion, the blue inserts will work fine. The "O" ring is an expedient that usually works but has a reputation of wearing. The "Defender" has been reported as working well but costs about $12 from most sources. The fix with the extra power spring is a more effective (also more cost effective) and longer lasting fix than either. The Wolff spring is well made and by far the largest and stiffest. On the other end, the Colt M4 is the smallest and just marginally stiffer than the original springs furnished by most manufacturers. The SAW Sales is the best made and best fit. Also the most costly. The Model 1 is a bit rough, but functional. The standard Model 1 spring comes with a black insert but is not their "extra power" spring (one extra coil). I am advised by RRA that their standard extractor spring is "extra power" with a black insert, but I have not examined one. I have had complete sucess and satisfaction will all of these springs shown. There are likely others that will work as well, these are just the ones that are more commonly referenced and available. Georgia Precision has the Wolff spring available for $1.50 and has a light shipping charge. I would recommend them as a source for these reasons. Other good suppliers can also provide them. |
