Last night I replaced the extractor spring and insert in my BR.( I am the second owner) I used a new Wolff HD spring and a DPMS new insert..with a Crane "O" ring that was already in the assembly. When re-assembling I placed the "wide" end of the spring in the extractor placed the "O" ring over that and then tried to set the extractor in place and pin it..  It was almost impossible to squeeze the extractor in place and then slide the pin in.. I finally got it to go( small pair of channel locks with a pad to compress the extractor in the bolt and then slide the pin)but I was afraid the I might be forcing something and would pay the price later..
Is it normally that difficult to replace an extractor spring?? or did I screw up??
P.S. Hand cycled two Mags of 30 and all seemed OK.. but still not sure..
Thanks

Basic AR15 Maintenance Tasks (Updated 10 APR 2007)

When replacing the extractor spring it should snap into place. The above link might help. I just did three extractor up-grades the other day. Starting them as outlined in the above link, then flipping over the extractor and pressing the spring home on a hard/smooth surface.
