First off I'm new to the AR platform. New to guns in general I guess. It's only been  less than a year since I got my first gun, now I have 8 (three 45acp, 380acp, two 12ga, 22rifle and now an AR-15) boy it's addicting.  Went out for the first time to shoot my AR. I couldn't afford the best thing out thier, so I'm not sure what you guys will think of the gun. It's a DEL-TON 16", I got what I could afford. Here is the problem.

Went out today to fire some rounds through it. I would chamber the first round and it would fire but not extract the spent shell. The bolt goes back and tries to chamber the next round but since the shell from the round before is still in the chamber it jams up. It has only had 5 rounds through this rifle and it does this same thing each time. The rounds are unfired new brass. After removing the mag I can then pull the charging handle back release it then pull it back again and it will then extract the fired shell.

I'm thinking the extractor spring is weak. I then read here in the forum about how this can happen. In a post by Randall he mentioned this

The bullet has not left the barrel yet, but it's past the gas port.
Too much high pressure gas is rushing into the carrier, causing it to move rearward faster then desired and unlock the bolt from the extension.
Pressures are still high so the cartridge case is NOT ready to be extracted yet.
The carrier's momentum continues to pull backward, but the pressures in the case actually hold in in the chamber.
This causes a hiccup in the carrier's momentum. The (weak) extractor spring allows the extractor to jump over the rim of the cartridge and the bolt carrier continues rearward, grabbing the next round and causing the classic "fired case in chamber, live round behind it" FTE

This sounds like what is happening. Any way to relive some of the gas? Sorry this may sound like a dumb question but I just don't know.

Thanks

If you think it is the extractor I would just order the upgrade from bravo company. That sounds like what you're describing and that is an easy fix.

what type Ammo. are you using? It could be your using real under powered Ammo. and just not getting enough gas pressure to make your AR work.

Try a crane o ring, simple solution to most extraction problems.

If the bolt is starting to retract the fired case,I don't think it's a extractor problem. I would check the bolt carrier key for tightness or signs of gas leakage. Maybe the gas block is louse or it's gas hole is not lined up correct with the bbl. gas exit hole. But first I would try some real quality 5.56 Ammo. if your bbl.s chamber is marked 5.56, if not then a quality American .223 Ammo.

Later if all fails then you always can order the extractor spring and O-Ring kit from The Bravo Company.

I had a del-ton 16" and had no issues with it at all but I mostly used PMC Bronze and foreign made 5.56.  I would make sure everything is aligned and that the gun is clean and try some different ammo.  I only sold the del-ton upper to help pay for a BCM mid length upper otherwise I would still have it.  I like Del-Ton quite a bit.

Yeah if it was a weak extractor it would not consistently extract after each manual try either. Change ammo and follow cleaning advice.

My old Bushy used to do this and a new extractor, and ammo change cured it. Being as i did both at the same time and was new such as yourself i dont know which one was the problem for sure.

After that when the gun would get 300 to 400 rounds through it it would do it again. This led me to believe it was the lack of cleaning issue.

Eventually solved problem by buying new Colt and a Armalite.

Well I seen what a crane o ring was. So I headed out to the garage and opened up the o-ring kit. Grabed two 005 o-rings and slipped them over the extractor spring put it back to gether and it works great no problems. So in a pinch you could use a couple 005 o-rings. I just ordered a kit from Brovo for the real fix though. Thanks for the help fellas

I'd get a D-fender and install it :

Contact the mfg.  Give them a chance to get it squared away.

the D fender ring is cheap and fixes it right up.

I have done that but no reply yet. Says it  takes up to 2 weeks for a reply. If they do say they will take care of it I would have to pay to ship it thier for them to probablr just put in a new spring. I'll see what they say
