| None of the DPMS 308 bolt carriers have the serrations in the side, so how does the forward assist push the carrier forward into battery? Maybe it pushes on the step at the necked-down rear area ? Thanks for input. Hammer |

I think it was put there for the guys who wanted a shell deflector (Lefties, etc) and since they were going that far added the FA so it would look like a typical AR. Nope, it's functional Update: I called DPMS customer support and they verified what cckw said. Looks only. Not good. |

Not sure who you spoke to at DPMS...this does work...used it at the range many times and am looking at it right now...you can see it engage the bolt carrier... Mike I spoke with 2 separate guys in customer support just to make sure and they both said the same thing - looks only. But, I got home and, after looking at it - you're right. And DPMS is right, too. There are no serrations, so you are not going to get any FA action with a round that is very far out of battery like on an AR15, so DPMS is right about that. But, like you said, I let the BCA down easy so that it did not slam down fully engaging the bolt into the barrel extension, and you are right - if you look in there you can see the end of the FA pawl pushing against that necked down step on the bolt carrier. I'm guessing about the last 1/8 inch or so I did not measure it, but it does push it on in. I guess I'm OK with this, at least it's some assist vs none at all. Thanks Mike. |

If you would have been in Vietnam in 1969, you would have cussed the POS M-16 rifle. I miss my buddy from Minnesota Lance Corporal Gene Dushka because of that piece of shit M-16. The forward assist told all of us unlucky bastards that something was wrong with this rifle from the beginning, but we had no choice.
The only choice of staying alive was to be very good friends with the M-60 operator. The M-60 gunner was always my best friend. I carried more .308 ammo than a Donkey could carry. Just feed that machine, unscrew that hot/glowing barrel, screw a cold barrel on, and keep on banging. Piss on the POS M-16 with it's forward assist. I have seen gooks that left the M-16 lay in the mud in favor of their Superior Kalashnikov AK-47. The M-16 bolt assist got more Marines killed in hopes that it actually worked, it didn't.. |

How does this have anything to do with a current model DPMS 308 forward assist tech question asked by the thread starter? Thank you for your service, but that does not really answer his question... |

WHAT does this have to do with a .308 DPMS? I wasn't aware they were issued in 'Nam. I appreciate your service, but your post would be better off in GD or General Firearms Discussion. |

It might work, but it's not made to be functional. It's there for the shell deflector. You don't need the forward assist to have a shell deflector. They could have had just the deflector, but they added a functional forward assist. It doesn't engage in the carrier if it is farther to the rear (like an AR15), but I have never seen a bolt carrier stick farther back on any AR. They normally only stick at the point where the bolt lugs engage (and even that is rare), which is where the F/A engages on the .308s. I have no idea why a sales person at DPMS would say that "it's there for looks", but it IS functional. I own one, and I have used it. |

Sorry, I got off topic. Dead Marines and forward assist will be forever stuck in my mind. Imagine a Marine banging on that forward assist and then his head explodes. I wish it would go away but it won't.
The forward assist is there because the rifle has failed and needs to be fixed. Why not have a combat rifle that doesn't need to be fixed? Garand. |

If you hate the Stoner design so much, why are you even on this forum? I think everyone is well aware of the problems that occured with the M16A1s in Vietnam, and doesn't need to hear about it in every thread on this forum. |

How about forward serrations on semi Autos. many designs are machined just for "the looks" it is what gives them personality, look at the non standard billet uppers(larue VLTOR Sun Devil) most have a proprietery design more for looks than function. When I get home every night, the first thing I do after unholstering my pistol and removing the magazine is grasp THE FRONT of the slide, rack it back, and have the now unchambered round fall into the palm of my hand. So I don't find that the "forward serrations" are not functional. Alot of the gun writers say they use those serrations to "press check" the slide to see if a round is chambered. I can tell that by looking at or feeling the extractor, so I've never felt the need to "press check". I'm not familar with the way the brands you mentioned machine their receivers but as someone who used to operate CNC mills, I could rationalize that parts we used to make that had ridges and strengthening ribs actually cost less to produce because we were not removing as much metal, which meant less time in the machine and longer tool life. A foward assist knob would need a whole other machine (lathe and/or part caster) to make. |
