Hello AR15.com ! I have been sitting on this beautiful SI Defense billet receiver for some time now and i finally have the finances to finish it up into my first AR build. The purpose of this build will be for self defense, SHTF, and target shooting, and some hunting if i lend out my 30-06. Since this will be the only rifle i will be able to build for a while because of upcoming financial obligations. I am looking to build something that is quality that will last a while and will not break down or degrade. It has to be some what versatile and still remain low maintenance and simple enough. After reading many threads of this forum, and doing my preliminary research this is what i have come up with. If you all have any suggestions/input i would love to hear it.
My requirements are as follows: Barrel: 16" Mid Length 5.56 NATO 1/7 Twist Chrome Bore and Chamber. ( went with 1/7 because i might also hunt with it. ) Quality A3 Upper 12" Free Float Rail, i am not a big guy, but i would also like my father to use this and he has more reach, i also like the idea of it covering the gas block. Quality Trigger/LPK. Adjustable Stock Not worried about any optics other then iron sights at this point. I would rather get the rifle built and decide what road for additional optics later. Currently Looking at: BCM BFHâ„¢ 16" Mid Length Upper Receiver Group with Optional BCM Bolt Carrier Group & Handle Package. Seems like many people here believe they are high quality, it is in my price range and i like the idea of the Cold Hammer Forged Barrels to improve the life of the barrel. Also comes in the 1/7 that i wanted and the bolt seems high quality. Seems like all around quality with out going overboard on price. LaRue Tactical 12.0" Handguard or Daniel Defense AR15 Lite Rail 12.0 FSPM link here One thing i can't seem to decide on is using the LaRue 12" and buying a low profile gas block, and new front sight or changing it to the DD 12" FSPM. This has an opening on the top of the quad rail for mid length systems. It costs $83 more then LaRue but i can use the front iron sight/gas block from the bravo company package so it would be a bit cheaper. Comments? Having trouble making up my mind. LaRue Tactical Low-profile Gas Block Needed since the Rail will cover the current gas block which has front iron sight attached? Magpul MOE Mil-Spec Model & Angled Fore Grip Quality/well priced Rock River Arms LRP Kit, Two Stage Trigger. seems like two stage triggers are the way to go. are these adjustable at all in terms of trigger pull? Troy Flip Down Iron sights Can't decide if i want flip down or not. Figure flip down would be better for the future when i get some optics. I am sure i am being a noob and missing something. Looks like as of right now it is totally around $1550. (LaRue option) Anyway, any suggestions, comments would be great need some expert opinions ! |

My advice would be shave money off the upper (get the standard BCM instead of the BFH BCM), the rail (get a Troy TRX Extreme, or the Troy/VTAC TRX), the sights (LMT fixed front with Troy/GG&G/MI rear), the LPK (standard RRA or Stag, for long term durability the two stage RRA is not the very best option).
You won't be giving up any noticeable amount of quality, but you'll be saving hundreds of dollars that you can put towards an optic (used, like new Aimpoint M2s in LaRue mounts populate the EE for $350-400), mags, ammunition, or paying bills so you're not living in a box under a bridge, cradling your new rifle. Here's a link to the BCM lightweight midlength with the VTAC rail installed $770 for complete upper $150 for sights $75 for LPK $150 for CTR stock kit $1145 total, you save $400. |

Great points, ya saving some cash would be nice. I didn't know two stage triggers decreased durability, is that only with RRA or just that across the board ? Troy TRX Extreme does look darn good and its all one part. |

Look into a Bill Springfield trigger to save a little more cash but keep the durability of the GI trigger. I love the profiles of the two railed forearms you're looking at, but I'd go with the DD for the wieght savings. I don't know what the Troy profiles are like but I think they are ugly as sin. This is all going to come down to personal preference.
I was in the same position with my build as you are now. I wanted to build an AR but knew I would only be able to build one before money would be tight again. I got the stuff I wanted and spent a tad bit more than I had planned but now I have the rifle that I'll be happy with for years to come because I know I bought quality stuff. So build the rifle you want, save money where you can but get the components that are important to you so you don't feel like to compromised so much that you don't like your weapon. |

I have reliable RRA 2 stage triggers, but they are not on "go-to" rifles. |
