Today I brought out the AR-15 RRA and the M-4 GSE. The RRA is longer than the M-4 by the length of the flash hider. The GSE tosses the shells about 5' towards the 1-2 oclock direction, and the RRA throws them 10' towards the 4-5 oclock direction. The GSE makes more spring noise as it shoots, and the RRA weighs more. Is there a standard spring length to check, or an explaination as to why one is louder? Should both throw the cases in the same spot? Both are identical design. BTW, the Tantal throws cases 30+ feet towards the 3 oclock direction and maybe 10-15' high!

There are so many factors that contribute to ejection pattern. Buffer spring, buffer weight, gas system, extractor tension, ejector tension, ammo, etc. all contribute. As long as your rifles are reliably ejecting, I wouldn't worry too much about the direction. Some of my ARs eject at 2:00, others at 5:00, and others somewhere in the middle.
For buffer spring serviceability inspection based on spring length, refer to the ARMY TM-23&P: http://www.ar15.com/content/index.html#guides |
