I just purchased my first AR yesterday (I'm already in love after my first 40 rounds through her!) and I'm a little confused on disassembly to clean.

Specifically, I can't seem to get the rear takedown pin pushed in to separate the upper and lower receivers.  I must be missing something, because when I push on it like the manual says, nothing happens at all.

Anyone have any tips/advice?

Thanks much everyone, and you'll be seeing more of me around here!

Check Here to make sure you are doing it right.  If you are doing it correctly, try a non marring punch.  New guns can be "tight" until they are "broken in".  Welcome to the sickness.

HOWDY, PATRIOT!

and WELCOME!

The above-thread is right on the money.

Squirt the entire pin area with a "break-free" oil, let sit awhile, try again.

Or, use a wooden or plastic down rod to gently tap it out.

It will get better with use/age!

NEVER FORCE AN ITEM!

All my new guns I've had to use a delrin punch or wood dowel and a very small peck with a light hammer to get the pins free the first time (dry, new gun, makes sense to me).

+1 on making sure you tap in the right place and direction, and just tap...not smack.

Is the bolt carrier forward before you try to push the takedown pin out?

The bolt carrier needs to be fully forward in order to separate the upper receiver from the lower receiver.

As already mentioned, new AR's can be a pain to disassemble when it comes to the pivot and take-down pins. Keep them lubed, use a non-marring tool to push them out. With time they will loosen up. Just don't get any crazy ideas about removing material from the receiver holes!

I use an unfired cartridge (or better yet, a dummy round or Safe-T-Trainer - brownells sells both)... lay the side of the bullet on the rear takedown pin and press the bullet... then use the rim on the backside of the cartridge to hook under the other side of the pin and lever it out.  Same with the front pivot pin.

P.S.  Welcome and best of luck!

I had problems with my FIRST ar like you stated and after tapping it out with the initial clean it has never stuck again. Minor detail with some new rifles. Congratulations on your FIRST ar and welcome to the black gun disease club....................

I found that by squeezing between the upper top and lower just behind the grip it come out easily.
