I got a compensator from a buddy of mine that he took off his 10/22, and was wondering if it would work on my 5.56 AR. It's the same thread size and fits fine, so that's not the issue. Just mainly worried about blowing my barrel/face up, or something to that effect . I stuck a round through the hole and it fits with room to spare, but thought I would ask before I do something potentially stupid. Here is a link to the part:

If it is 1/2''x28 thread that fits your barrel and the bullet fits with room to spare then it will be fine. maybe. .223/5.56 has a lot higher pressure gas exiting the barrel. I've heard this can be dangerous on .22 brakes, depending on what material they're made of. Notice I said "heard" so take that for what its worth. |

Brownell's lists the material as 6061 aluminum, and the cross section looks thin. I'm thinking centerfire .223 pressure will distort and damage it in fairly short order. If it were steel, or thicker, it might be able to stand up to .223 use better. |
Update: I tried it out this weekend, and it seemed to have worked fine. Only ran a 30rd mag through it, but no physical problems that I can see. The only problem I did have with it, is that it made it loud as hell for some reason. I didn't put on my plugs initially cause I was only planning on shooting a couple rounds, and that first one rocked my ears like a 155mm.
Thanks again for the help. |
