What is the thread pattern for the rear screw threads of the buffer tube?

I got a tube from a forum member for nothing and promptly sent it off to John Thomas with some other stuff for refinishing. I got it back today and tried to install the screw for the buttstock only to find out that the first threads are all mushroomed over. Yayyy more problems.

Thanks in advance

That's the pistol grip screw.

Buffer tube is 1 3/16 x 16.

It's also for the upper buttstock screw, that's what I thought the question was.

If you get a thread repair file in 16tpi you can probably dress them up. It's a shame you didn't see it earlier, but at least it's in a place that doesn't show.

Yeah, I'm with heat-n-beat. A thread file may set you back $20. It will fix the problem you described and if it ever happens again, you will have the tool to fix it with.

Any real gunsmith will have a 1/4-28 tap.

If you have an extra pistol grip screw, you can make your own thread chaser with a Dremel.

Thanks guys.

Yeah, I sure wish I took a sec to check it out before shipping it off. not a big deal though, my old man is going to take it to his machine shop tomorrow and get it squared away.

M1carbinekid,

I wish I would have noticed the damaged threads before I anodized the tube.  I would have certainly contacted you to let you know I found a problem.  Since I did miss that damage, if you want to return the item for re-anodizing (after you've fixed the threads), I'll do it for you for just the cost of shipping.

Too bad all of the weapon forums aren't like this place. Looks like we sort of watch out for and "police" each other. JT is a squared away unit.

Assuming the threads that are messded up are the 1/4-28's - You may want to suggest starting the tap from the inside bottom of the tube. If the threads are buggered up enough to not let the screw start then they might be bad enough to get the tap started out of sequence from the original threads and then they would be cross threaded and really not good.

AGREED! Sort of... I think this forum has one of the most tight knit groups I have seen. I am thankful I stumbled in here and enjoy the camraderie. My wallet on the other hand hates this place.

I know I'm fairly new here but I'm always amazed at how good forum members are to one another.  Now if I ever get my ox out the ditch I too can complain about the shinking of my wallet!

John, its not your fault, its mine for being in a hurry. I don't think it will need reanodizing, Thank you for the offer though.

Also to give you the obligatory plug, everything you did looks great. I cant wait to get this damn tube fixed so I can get this pain this thing put back together.

I just called the auto parts store and they have a 1/4-28 tape so I'm going up there now to see what can be done.
