After installing a collapsible stock I was doing a function check and noticed that if I rode the charging handle back down, the bolt seemed to stop about an 1/8" from the chamber, but usually popped in place after I totally released the charging handle.

On my other 2 AR's it does not do this, (it's a smooth ride all the way to the chamber) so I swapped lowers and it still does the same on another collapsible stock and a standard A2 stock.

Nothing appears to be damaged on the bolt, and I even cleaned it again to make sure. It was getting late last night so I didn't troubleshoot it as long as I wanted. Maybe a wicked cleaning to the chamber area with a brush?

Anyone ever had this problem?

Thanks

Check your gas tube/carrier key alignment......

How many rounds do you have on that bolt. Most of my AR's will do the same thing if their new and have not been broke in with a couple hundred rounds on it. This may be your problem just not enough rounds down the tube to loosen everything up.

Check your gas rings and clean out the chrome lined part of your bolt carrier.

I noticed if I rode the handle all the way to the upper receiver latch notch... it would close by itself (Wolf XP action spring, Macfarland gas rings) regardless of what I did. Short of holding it back, it would close all the time.

At the range when everything gets dirty, it would NOT close if I rode the charging handle.

The part of the carrier that contacts the gas rings would get very dirty and the tight fit would cause some friction. It would close by itself if I let go of the handle after pulling it back, it would operate normally when firing the rifle.

Since you installed a new stock - could it be that you're using a weak action spring? The carbine stock action springs are shorter than the rifle length springs and if they're weak, it might cause problems.

What you are describing isn't all that unusual in ARs. Best solution is to shoot it until the problem goes away

I thought you're not suppose to ride the CH.  And besides, a little slap of the forward assist will fix the problem.
