The spring under my bolt catch is too strong and prevents the bolt catch from holding the bolt back after the last shot. Is there some way I can weaken the spring a little? The length is about right.

Before you automatically assume it's the spring, does the bolt catch hold the bolt carrier to the rear when you retract the BC and the bolt catch is depressed manually?

Have you tested with known good magazines?  A bad magazine follower will also cause this type of malfunction.

Have you made any changes to the weapon such as replacing the stock or receiver extension, or the bolt catch assembly?

Have you done a short stroke test?  With only one round in the magazine, chamber and fire.  Does the bolt lock back every time, occasionally, or not at all?  Then, load a round into the chamber, push in on the bolt catch and fire. Does the bolt lock back?  Do the testing with several different magazines...

1 - check
2- check - 10 different usgi mags that work in 3 other guns
3- it's a fairly new home build.
4 - Not exactly like that. I have tried single-round loads and it doesn't always lock back. I haven't tried holding the bolt catch. But if you remove the upper and insert a magazine, then depress the bolt catch so that it presses down on the mag follower, the mag follower doesn't return to the top after you release the catch.

Thanks!

When you installed the roll pin, did it go in with a fair bit of force?

When I put my 1st together, I had no idea how smoothly anything should assemble...
My bolt catch pin-hole was quite undersized and wouldn't allow the catch to rotate freely.
After opening it up a bit ( bless the AR Gods for making the lower interfere with the pin removal! )  it worked fine...got me prety panicked tho'!!

Let us know when you get it fixed?
