Hey, I'm very new to AR's and this is my first post here, But I was just wondering if I can change out a heavy barrel on a RRA Varmint to a lightweight chrome-moly barrel? and if so what would i need to get? just a barrel nut, floating hand gaurd, and different gas block? thanks guys.

Yes you can change out a barrel quite easily. It's even easier if you just sell the old upper and get a new one built to the specs you want.
What you'll need depends on what you buy be it a complete barrel assembly, or just the tube with the barrel extension. Do you want to carry over you current handguard system (and if so what type to you have)? For tools you'll need at a minium the proper barrel wrench, some moly disulfide grease (without graphite!!!!), a torque wrench, either barrel blocks or an upper receiver block, and a vice that can grab said blocks (a 6" opening is needed if you use an upper reciever block). For some free floating rail systems you'll also need their custom wrench. If your current barrel has a pinned gas block you'll need a pin punch and a good size hammer (I'd also suggest some penetrating oil like Kroil and a block meant to hold the gas block in place and will allow the pins to be punched out) On the other hand if you just buy an upper all you do is push the two take down pins to take the old one off, then drop the new one on and push the pins back in place. |
| Yes you can. You'll need an upper block, vice, barrel nut wrench/multi wrench, moly grease, torque wrench & that's about it. The new barrel might already come with a barrel nut so you'll need to check into that with which ever particular barrel you decide to purchase. Also, the particular FF rail you get might have its own proprietary barrel nut. Low pro gas block if you're wanting the rail to extend past the gas block. HTH. |
| thanks alot for the response, Yea i have looked into buying other uppers but I'm a auto tech and i love taking things apart for the hell of it haha I got this rifle as a gift always wanted one just never got around to it and I just wanted to change a few things about it, I know it comes with a floating hand guard thats why i thought it would be easier to get another with rails if i get a new barrel. |

Then go for it. Be sure to download the Maintenance Manual -23&P as it has complete step-by-step directions in chapter 3 and torque values.
