I have a Bushmaster XM15 with a 20" HBAR that I am planning on reworking.  I want to add a Troy 13.5" MRF and do a barrel chop so that there is just enough room left for a KX3 or some other similar looking flash hider or comp.  Can anyone tell me if this will cause any problems for my rifle length gas system with the reduction of barrel length after the gas block?  Thanks in advance.

Just how close to the front of the sight tower do you plan on cutting it off? I have no idea of the dimensions of the parts you talk about, so I can't get too specific.

While it is theoretically possible to have a rifle run with just an inch or so of barrel past the tower, you have to open up the gas port to make it run, and then it will run harder like a typical carbine. (assuming it wants to run at all)

Your best bet is to pull the barrel and put on one with a mid length gas system that is already cut to 16" or 18" or what ever you need.

I cut a HBAR rifle back to 16.25", I drilled out the gas port (*)  and it runs absolutly fabulious!

* there was a guy on here named Mongo or something, he told me the size to drill it. I forget right at the moment, but I THINK it was .110. That should definatly be varified before drilling, but you just take off the FSB and use a drill press to drill the barrel hole bigger. I chopped mine on a chop saw and crowned it with a round grinding wheel in my drill press. Sub MOA accuracy!

Wow!!

Actually it was more like a grinding "ball" thing, it was round, so I could come straight up to crown the muzzle. Other guys have used a marble with valve lapping compound......tried & true!

I was planning on coming about 2 inches ahead of the front sight base, which would be changed to a low-profile gas block

I had my 16inch Bushy chop to 14.7 in 2001

I hate longer barrel carbines

but anyway the accuracy was the same
