| Like the title states I’m looking for your thoughts. What would you consider to be the bare minimum selection of AR specific tools to build a decent operating AR? Let’s just start with assuming the builder has a work bench, pin punches, a bench vise and most normal hand tools. |
|
Upper receiver block Barrel vise clamp thing of some sort Castle nut wrench Then whatever wrench your flavor of barrel nut may require. This is bare minimum other than generic standard hand tools. |

Is the OP assembling the upper or will he buy a complete upper? Makes a lot of difference. For just a lower, you can get by with a couple of pin punches, a 1/4" clevis pin for installing the take-down pin, a light hammer, a pair of Channel Lock pliers for the trigger guard pin (and maybe the bolt release pin), a castle nut wrench and a screwdriver/Allen wrench for the grip screw. For the upper, you're probably also going to want an AR multi-tool, an action block/clamp, and perhaps a specialized tool to fit whatever forearm system you go with. |

- Something to fit the barrel nut. - Something to fit the castle nut. - A thin 3/4 inch open end wrench for a standard bird cage FH. (These three may be found together in a combination tool.) You have to have something to hold the barrel or upper, hard wood blocks and a vise will work, but are not AR specific. Something to hold the lower when you torque the receiver extension, or castle nut, again not necessarily AR specific. Pin punches, preferably roll pin punches, again not necessarily AR specific. I am going to assume you are not going to be assembling the carrier key to the carrier, otherwise you will need something stake the screws. |

| Since everyone has mentioned pretty much everything you'll want or need, I'll add in a lower receiver magwell block. I use mine all the time. They are cheap on Ebay and Amazon and you'll use it regularly. It makes assembly of a lower so much easier. |

I have 30-something barrel nut wrenches and means to install most things at least a couple different ways. roll pin holders for gas blocks, trigger guard roll pins, forward assists, even the forward assist pawl. getting the ejector roll pin installed in a bolt is a simple task. 1/2" drive torque wrenches are necessary so I know the foot pounds being used for a barrel nut. this is especially necessary when I'm redoing a KAC URX 2, 3, or 3.1 handguard. |

I have bench vises on 3 corners of my workbenches in the shop, and 2 of them typically have a magwell block in them. I find if I want to do a trigger swap quickly, I can set up both lowers within 6 or 7' of each other and use a magnetic bowl to hold the contents of each before repopulating them. |
