Generally speaking, I think the heavy OTMs cause more tissue disruption but I agree on the use of medium weight barrier blind loads. Those soft points or expanding hollow points like the TSX are great choices for SBRs, too as they probably expand a little further out than the heavy OTMs can fragment. Still, a 75 gr pill at full yaw can create a substantial wound. Ultimately, I'm going to keep the 75 gr PPU for home defense/SHTF because I'm pretty heavily invested in it. I'm working on stocking up some 65 gr Game King hand loads for SHTF and once I get enough of it stored up, I'll re-evaluate the plan.
I would be comfortable with any load for HD/SHTF if it: Holds 2 MOA or better Cycles all my rifles reliably Is affordable enough for me to verify the above and buy it in sufficient quantity to be useful Penetrates at least 12" Fragments or expands reliably out to 100m from a 16" I think we get a little wrapped around the axle in trying to figure out the *best* ammo. .223/5.56mm is very effective when it fragments and fairly effective (more so than a handgun) even when it doesn't. I think the differences between loads that meet the above standards are minimal and unlikely to effect your odds of survival. |

I should have said "less than ideal for defense." Realistically, 11" is perfectly adequate in most cases. It's unlikely you'll find a situation where 1" makes the difference between winning or loosing. Still, I prefer the 75 gr version. |

First, thanks to the folks who regularly test these things (Molon, bluefalcon e al)
Just one data-point really, having seen the different results posted on velocity of subject load. Shot a 10-shot string 4 days ago of what I ass-u-me to be pretty recent production, acquired from SG Ammo. Wish I'd noted a lot or date number. My plain-jane 16" carbine that is a regular companion, nothing fancy but it's fairly "inclusive" as to ammo it does well with. No magnified optic. Ambient temp that morning was a 64°F & calm. Average MV for the group was 2483 fps (smoothed by the software based on 2471 w/chrono 15-ft from the muzzle). Accuracy was about MILSPEC which is fine by me. This gun normally runs XM193 (3103 fps) or AE223 (2958 fps) to nearly same practical POI. Function issues: Zero. With the gun zero'd for its regular 55gr load (the 50-200 approach), the PPU was a hair right and 1.5 minutes high. Intent of this load is minute of brick/Molatov tosser so - 100m and in - frankly don't care. It's clear from the testing that this load and its bullet are a good combination terminally. Not dedicating the gun to this load because I have a boatload each of the aforementioned 55gr FMJ-BT which I actually like. But it does seem this is a worthwhile thing to have some of, even if one doesn't dedicate the gun to it, and just learns where it shoots. I would slap a mag of this in, if called for, with no qualms. The reports are one of those "1 picture = 1K words" things, so thanks again. |
