How do size or chose the right buffer?

It depends on your gun and your ammo.

I was told to get the heaviest that will reliably cycle and lock back the bolt on an empty mag while using the lowest powered ammo you plan on shooting. The only way to know which one that will be is to test them out.

I personally don't pay all that much attention or bother to do the testing. I start with an H buffer and if it works, which they always have, I stick with it.

Be  careful with light ammo. I have a rifle lenght JP polished spring with standard buffer in my set-up. At 3gun practice today,  I tried my buddy's light reloads and I had extraction failures and my bolt did not lock back after the last round. This never happens with factory spec ammo.
