I'm looking to purchase the Aimpoint CompM3 for a new rifle project.  I have never purchased an Aimpoint before.  Anything I should know/consider?

Also...the M3 comes with a rubber cover.  Is there a hole for the mounts?  Or when mounted to the gun do you remove the rubber cover?  I'm just courious because all mounts cannot be standard.  Do I have to purchase a specific mount for it to work?

Thanks guys/gals!

The rubber cover fits over the mount. The LaRue LT150 is THE ONLY mount worth considering. Buy the M3 if you *MIGHT EVER* use NV equipment mounted directly to the rifle behind the optic. Otherwise buy the ML3 and save some cash.

I found the M3 for $427 w/ Free Shipping...

Is that a good deal?

Where do you guys get your extra batteries from?

What MOA should I get?  It's going on a Sprinfield Armory M1A Socom 16

Thats a good deal. I don't know which dot size you should get, I don't have much time behing a 2 MOA dot. Personally I think that the subtend issue is overrated. By the time it comes into play, you are holding the dot over the target anyway.

Don't worry about batteries.  They are supposed to last 50,000 hours on a mid-level setting.  In any event they are pretty standard batteries available at any drug store.

I have a M3 in 2 MOA and an ML2 in a 4 MOA.  I think there is a decent difference between the two -- particularly at 50+ yards.  In my opinion, the 2 MOA should give you more accuracy at a distance and really doesn't suffer at close distances.

I was thinking about getting the 2 MOA.  Thanks for your input.

Aimpoints rock. Eotechs rock too, both are good.

The only source for batteries in my area is radio shack and that is their own brand.  I checked all the usual places with no luck?  Midway and GandRTactical.com have the oem battery.  I know they last for years in the M3/ML3 but it never hurts to have a spare in the Larue mount just in case you have one die prematurely.  On the M1A, I would mount it as far back as possible while still staying out of the ejection path.  Have fun with the big gun up close.

I have the AIMPOINT ML2 and a EOTECH 551

still have the same battery for the last 5/6 years now

I'm curious to know how you have yours mounted.  Is it mounted closer to you or further down your rifle?

How is the field of view from further distances?

I will have to mount the M3 a good distance down the rifle on the Socom 16.

Aimpoint are pretty good, I've been a user since the early 90s and my old models that I used on pistols still works now.

I have an Aimpoint M2 with a Knight's Armament high straight mount with lower 1/3 co-witness mounted to the forward most position on my upper receiver.

I also have an EOTech 551 which I use without any riser mount and have an absolute co-witness.

Aimpoint M2 owner here and very pleased!

I had first installed it on my shorty AR carbine but just last week switched it over
to my FAL. Works really well on both.

Thursday, when I put the Aimpoint on the FAL again, I was shooting a cast iron water meter cover, rapid fire while standing. It looks like a small manhole lid. Anyway, we hung it out at the 50 yd berm and it was really fun watching it through the Aimpoint bounce around with each hit. I know 50 yds is not very far but I could have hit it at longer distances almost just as easy. I've used it out to 200 yds on IPSC type targets, worked good.

I like the Aimpoint so much that I've decided not to get a folding para stock for my FAL
and try to get another Aimpoint (M3 this time) so I can have one on each rifle.

If you knew me you would understand that having a folder on my FAL was a big deal, always wanted one. That's how much I like the Aimpoint.

I'd also like to get the Aimpoint 3x Magnifier later on.

You won't go wrong with the Aimpoint,

Flyer

I'm an ACOG fan but just purchased an ML3 for my next project.  I will be using a LaRue LT129 mount.  I like the 2MOA for long distance targets.

That's the only mount I would use as well.  Should be a nice little project.

Straycat,

What do you like best about the M3/3x set up? Have you shot with it yet?

Thanks,
